Taira no Munemori

Taira no Munemori was the third son of Taira no Kiyomori and became head of the Taira clan after the deaths of his elder brothers Shigemori and Motomori, rising to the rank of Minister of the Interior. Leading the clan after Kiyomori's death, he is often portrayed in the Heike Monogatari as lacking the military talent of his father and brother. As relations with the retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa deteriorated during the Genpei War that followed Prince Mochihito's 1180 call to arms, Munemori was forced to abandon the capital in 1183 ahead of Minamoto no Yoshinaka's advance, taking Emperor Antoku and the imperial regalia with him.

Retreating first to Fukuhara and then to Yashima in Sanuki Province, the Taira suffered successive defeats at Ichi-no-Tani and Yashima before the clan was finally annihilated at the Battle of Dan-no-ura in Nagato Province on March 24, 1185. While Emperor Antoku and many kinsmen drowned themselves, Munemori could not bring himself to do so and was pulled from the sea along with his son Kiyomune, becoming a prisoner of the Minamoto.

The Taira clan is said to have possessed an heirloom tachi known as Kogarasu Maru, reportedly bestowed by the imperial court on ancestor Taira no Sadamori for suppressing the Johei-Tengyo rebellions, and passed down through generations of clan heads. Munemori was the last custodian of this treasured sword; its whereabouts were said to have been lost with the clan's destruction at Dan-no-ura, though it later surfaced in the keeping of the Ise family, who claimed Taira descent.

Taken to Kamakura to meet Minamoto no Yoritomo, Munemori was denied clemency and was beheaded along with his son on the way back to Kyoto, at Shinohara in Omi Province.

While the Heike Monogatari judges Munemori harshly as a leader unequal to his father and brother, variant texts such as the Genpei Jōsuiki depict a more sympathetic side: a father who, even as a captive, remained devoted to the safety of his son Kiyomune. He remains, through these accounts, both the figure most associated with bearing the blame for the Taira clan's fall and a father caught in the chaos of a collapsing age.
