The Bun'an era (1444-1449) was an era name of the mid-Muromachi period, falling after Kakitsu and before Hōtoku, during a time when the position of shogun was vacant. Swordsmiths of the Bizen Osafune school, such as Norimitsu, were active.
Description
The Bun'an era (1444-1449) is an era name of the mid-Muromachi period. It lasted from the era change made on the 5th day of the 2nd month of Kakitsu 4 (23 February 1444), which was a kasshi kakurei (the era change customarily made in a kasshi year of the sexagenary cycle), until the 28th day of the 7th month of Bun'an 6 (16 August 1449), when the era was changed to Hōtoku. The emperor was Go-Hanazono. The office of shogun remained vacant, and in the 4th month of Bun'an 6, Ashikaga Yoshinari (later Yoshimasa) received the appointment as seii taishōgun (shogun). In terms of sword history, swordsmiths such as Norimitsu of the Bizen Osafune school were active in this period.
