With the arrival of Commodore Perry in Kaei 6 (1853), Japan was forced to open to foreign trade. The overwhelming destructive power of Western cannons and rifles drastically diminished the practical battlefield significance of the Japanese sword, which had been the military's mainstay throughout the Edo period. During the turmoil of the Bakumatsu era, firearms became the center of warfare, relegating blades to a secondary role.
The Rapid Adoption of Western Learning and Changes in Sword-Making
The military swords (guntō) of the Bakumatsu period were initially fashioned after Western models, with both blade and hilt resembling European sabers. However, the Satsuma Rebellion (Meiji 10, 1877) saw Satsuma's saber units achieve repeated victories against the rifle-armed Meiji government forces, proving that the Japanese sword still possessed significant military value.
In response to these battlefield successes, military swords shifted from pure Western-style sabers to a hybrid design combining a Western-style hilt (tsuka) with a Japanese blade. Concurrently, inexpensive Western-style blades incorporating Solingen steel—a high-grade German blade steel—were developed, including the Murata blade. This represented the fusion of Western technology with the Japanese sword-making tradition.
