Overview
Overview
Koromo Castle was a castle in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, and the seat of the Naitō clan, lords of Koromo Domain in Mikawa Province. It was built on Mount Dōji and is also called Shichishū Castle, because seven provinces could be seen from the hill.
Domain Establishment and Relocation
The Naitō family entered Koromo in 1749 (Kanen 2) and governed the domain until the Meiji Restoration. The original plan was to build in central Toyota City, but work was halted by flood damage, so the castle was moved to Mount Dōji and completed in 1785 (Tenmei 5). The construction cost is said to have been borne by the shogunate.
Abandonment
The castle was dismantled in 1871 (Meiji 4), after the Meiji Restoration.
Present Condition
On the castle hill stands the Toyota City Museum of Art. On its grounds, a corner turret has been restored in concrete on the remaining stone walls.
