Naegi Castle is a historic castle in Chūbu dating from the Founded in the 1530s (Tenbun era); demolished in 1871, whose lord was Tōyama clan (Naegi Tōyama family).
Overview
Naegi Castle in Nakatsugawa, Gifu, rises above the Kiso River gorge on a cluster of massive boulders at 432 meters elevation. Its builders incorporated the giant rock formations directly into the castle's foundations and walls — wedging stone courses into natural crevices and using the boulders themselves as cornerstones. The result is one of Japan's most visually striking castle ruins, nicknamed "the sky castle" or "Gifu's Machu Picchu."
The Tōyama clan of Naegi governed this modest domain of 10,000 koku through twelve generations from the Sengoku era to the Meiji Restoration. Despite its small size, the domain maintained independence through loyalty and cohesion. The castle's structures were demolished in 1871, but the exceptional stone walls survive in excellent condition. The site has gained enormous popularity in recent years, particularly during autumn foliage and when low clouds create a sea-of-clouds (unkai) effect at dawn.
Connection to Swords
Naegi Castle's sword heritage connects to Mino Province's renowned blade tradition. Mino-mono (Mino-style swords) from the Seki area — roughly one hour from Naegi — are among Japan's most celebrated practical swords, a tradition continuing to the present day. The Kiso River route passing below Naegi carried Mino swords north into Shinano and brought raw iron and timber in return. The Tōyama clan of Naegi collected fine blades across twelve generations — Mino, Owari, and Sōshū traditions among them. Some swords survive at local shrines and the Naegi Castle Ruins Tōyama Archive. Visitors to Naegi can extend their trip to Seki City's Cutlery Museum and working sword workshops to experience Mino's living blade culture.
