八上城
Yakami Castle is a historic castle in the Kansai region (Sengoku period). Its lord was Hatano clan.
Overview
Yakami Castle is a mountain castle on a hill about 3.5 km southeast of Sasayama Castle in Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture. Regarded as one of the largest medieval mountain castles in Tamba Province, it served as the stronghold of the Hatano clan, the region's leading local power.
Background
The Hatano rose in the later 15th century, when Hatano Kiyohide was appointed deputy governor of Taki District for his service in the Onin War and based himself at Okutani Castle. Yakami Castle is known as the clan's base.
History
When Akechi Mitsuhide, acting on Oda Nobunaga's orders, set out to conquer Tamba, Yakami became the site of the campaign's fiercest fighting. Besieged by Mitsuhide's army, the castle fell after a siege of about a year, and the Hatano clan was destroyed.
Today
The ruins were designated a National Historic Site on March 2, 2005.
