Overview
Overview
Nakano Castle was a castle compound in Nakano, Hino Town, Shiga Prefecture, also called Hino Castle. After Otowa Castle was abandoned in 1523 (Taiei 3), the Gamō clan is said to have built it on open ground at Nakano as a new seat. It was a castle compound of about 100 meters square, surrounded by large moats and earthen ramparts.
The Gamō Clan and the Honnō-ji Incident
It was the seat of Gamō Sadahide, Katahide and Ujisato, and is said to be the birthplace of Ujisato. During the Honnō-ji Incident, Katahide is said to have worked with Ujisato to protect the wife and children of Oda Nobunaga at this castle.
Abandonment and Present Condition
After Ujisato moved to Ise in 1584 (Tenshō 12), the castle was no longer used. In 1620 (Genna 6), the Ichihashi family, who were enfeoffed here, built their domain office outside the castle, and the castle was never used again. Parts of the earthen ramparts and moats and a well site remain, and a shrine associated with the Ichihashi family stands on the rampart.
