Najima Castle is a historic castle in the Kyūshū region (Built in the Tenbun era (1532-1555); extensively rebuilt by Kobayakawa Takakage in 1588). Its lord was Tachibana Akitoshi / Kobayakawa Takakage.
Overview
Najima Castle stood on the Hakata Bay coast at Najima in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka. It is best known as the residence developed by Kobayakawa Takakage.
Background
It is said to have been built during the Tenbun era (1532-1555) by Tachibana Akitoshi, a retainer of the Otomo clan and lord of Tachibanayama Castle, and at first served as an outlying castle of Tachibanayama.
History
After Toyotomi Hideyoshi's pacification of Kyushu in 1586, Kobayakawa Takakage entered the castle and, on Hideyoshi's orders, extensively rebuilt it as his seat in 1588. Kobayakawa Hideaki later resided there as well.
Features
The castle had a harbor usable by the Kobayakawa fleet, a core part of the Mori navy, and was equipped with early modern stone walls and a keep.
Today
Most of the site has been urbanized; traces remain around the keep platform and Najima Shrine. The area is maintained as Najima Castle Ruins Park.
