Isesaki Castle

Isesaki Castle, located in Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture, served as a strategic stronghold in southeastern Kōzuke Province (modern-day Gunma) during the Sengoku and early Edo periods. The castle's origins trace to the Sengoku period, when local daimyo Yura Narishige rebuilt it in 1565 (Eiroku 8). Narishige donated land to Ise Grand Shrine and established the name "Isesaki" (伊勢崎), derived from "Ise no Saki" (the cape of Ise), which became the castle's spiritual guardian. The castle town developed into a commercial and industrial center under this spiritual patronage. The fortress featured robust defensive architecture: multiple baileys, deep moats, and fortified earthen ramparts. The Yura were transferred to Ushiku in Hitachi in 1590, and in 1601 Inagaki Nagashige entered the castle as the first lord of Isesaki Domain. During the Edo period, Isesaki Castle functioned as the seat of Isesaki Domain's daimyo and served as a critical administrative center for northern Kanto. Under the One Castle per Province Edict issued in 1615 (Genna 1), the castle was abandoned the following year, in 1616 (Genna 2). Today, the castle site operates as a public park, preserving remnants of stone walls and moat traces.
