Ashikaga Clan Residence (Banna-ji) is a historic castle in Kantō dating from the Built in late 12th century, survived from Kamakura through Edo period, whose lord was Ashikaga Yoshikane.
Overview
Ashikaga Clan Residence, located in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture, is believed to have been built by Ashikaga Yoshikane, the second leader of the Ashikaga clan, in the late 12th century. Originally a samurai mansion, the grounds later housed Banna-ji, the Ashikaga clan's family temple of the Shingon sect. Enclosed by water moats and earthen ramparts, this rectangular fortified residence measured approximately 223m north-south and 175m east-west, making it one of the largest samurai residences of its class during the Kamakura period. Four gates provided access from cardinal directions. The main temple hall is designated a National Treasure, while the bell tower and sutra repository are Important Cultural Properties. The site is designated a National Historic Site and was selected as Japan's 100 Famous Castles (No. 15) in 2006. Today it functions as Dainichi Park.
