Overview of the Museum
Operated by the Japan Art Sword Preservation Society (NBTHK), this institution is recognized as the leading authority as a museum dedicated exclusively to Japanese swords domestically. It opened in Yoyogi, Shibuya Ward, Tokyo in 1968 (Showa 43) and has served as the core institution for the preservation and promotion of Japanese sword culture for over half a century. In January 2018 (Heisei 30), it relocated to its current site within the former Yasuda Garden in Yokoami, Sumida Ward, where it was reborn as a new facility equipped with state-of-the-art exhibition equipment and climate control systems. The relocation site is positioned directly adjacent to the Ryogoku Kokugikan, making it an ideal location within an area rich in Japan's traditional culture.
Collections and Exhibitions
The collection comprises approximately 200 items centered on swords and blades including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, along with sword fittings, armor, and historical documents. The permanent exhibition is structured to provide a comprehensive overview of Japanese sword history from the ancient blades (koto) of the Heian period through the Edo period's latest period blades (shinshin-to), allowing visitors to compare and appreciate the distinctive characteristics of each of the Five Great Schools (Yamashiro, Yamato, Bizen, Soshu, and Mino). The lighting design, which brings out the maximum beauty of the blade's jihada texture and hamon pattern, is highly acclaimed by specialists both domestically and internationally.
Authentication and Special Exhibitions
The authentication certificates issued by NBTHK (Special Preservation Blade, Preservation Blade, etc.) are globally recognized as quality assurance for Japanese swords. At this museum, visitors can systematically learn how to appreciate swords and blades based on these authentication standards. Throughout the year, four special exhibitions are held, with thematic concentrated displays of renowned blades that consistently draw attention from sword enthusiasts. Additionally, NBTHK regularly hosts authentication seminars, research meetings, and appreciation sessions, providing valuable opportunities to directly examine and appreciate actual swords in hand through "hands-on appreciation."
