Tsukamoto Art Museum

The Tsukamoto Art Museum opened in 1983 (Shōwa 58) in Urashinmachi, Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture, based on the collection of the late Tsukamoto Sozan, a businessman from Sakura. It is a museum specializing in Japanese swords and sword fittings (including scabbards). The collection numbers more than 100 items, and the sword blades and scabbards in the collection are displayed in rotation.

Display Policy

Rather than showing the entire collection at all times within its limited exhibition space, the museum rotates about 20 works every three months. This allows visitors to encounter different works on each visit.

Position of the Collection

The collection includes swords from a wide range of periods, from the Heian period to the present day, including works spanning various eras and schools. Although small in scale, it is a museum dedicated to Japanese swords with one of the largest collections in the country.

Access and Operation

Admission is free. The museum is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, public holidays, and the New Year period, but it is open on the third Saturday of the month. Access is also convenient: it is about a 10-minute walk from Keisei-Sakura Station and about a 20-minute walk from JR Sakura Station, and it can be visited together with sightseeing in the historic streetscape of the Sakura castle town.
