Okura Shukokan Museum

Okura Shukokan is Japan's oldest private museum, founded by Meiji industrialist Okura Kihachiro (1837–1928) and located in Toranomon, Minato Ward, Tokyo. Since its opening in 1917 (Taishō 6), it has continuously collected and displayed Japanese and East Asian art, occupying a special position in Japanese museum history through its high-quality holdings, which include 3 National Treasures and 13 Important Cultural Properties (as of 2023). Following renovation in 2019, the current building stands adjacent to the main building of Hotel Okura Tokyo, functioning as a cultural hub in central Tokyo.

The museum's collections include swords and sword fittings. The Bizen tradition and Ichimonji school were a representative group of swordsmiths of the Kamakura period, characterized by graceful forms with deep curvature and the ornate chōji-midare hamon. Ichimonji tachi are renowned as masterpieces embodying the golden age of Japanese swords in the Kamakura period, and works designated as National Treasures are transmitted throughout the country.

The museum also holds multiple Important Cultural Property swords, with masterpieces from the Ko-Bizen, Yamashiro, and Sōshū traditions. The collection of sword fittings (tsuba, kozuka, kōgai, menuki) is equally rich, featuring masterworks by renowned metalsmithing masters from the Azuchi-Momoyama through Edo periods. Okura Shukokan occasionally presents special exhibitions in spring and autumn emphasizing swords, armor, and sword fittings, and functions as an official information source for sword enthusiasts.

As a cultural facility integrated with Hotel Okura Tokyo in central Tokyo, it offers excellent access for foreign visitors, and its importance as a tourism hub capturing inbound search demand for terms such as "bizen osafune" and "japanese sword museum" continues to grow.
