Overview
Ota Osumi Shunpei Art Museum, located in Ota City, Gunma Prefecture, is an art museum dedicated to the works of contemporary master swordsmith Osumi Shunpei (1932–2009), designated as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure). The museum opened in November 2012 in a renovated former residence of the swordsmith, serving as a cultural institution that transmits the traditional techniques and aesthetics of Japanese sword-making to future generations.
Life and Achievements of Osumi Shunpei
Osumi Shunpei was born in Ota City in 1932. In 1952, he apprenticed under Miyairi Shōhei, a future Living National Treasure, and received his sword-making certification from the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 1957. At the New Swords Exhibition, he received an Excellence Award on his first submission in 1958, followed by six consecutive years of special prizes. He received the Masamune Prize, the highest award in the Japanese sword world, three times, in 1974, 1976, and 1978. He was honored as an Honorary Citizen of Ota City in 1985 and recognized as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1997. Known as "Osumi of the Straight Blade," he mastered multiple classical traditions—Yamato, Yamashiro, and Bichū Aoe schools—while establishing his distinctive style focused on straight-edge blades (suguha). He passed away in October 2009 at age 77.

The museum displays numerous swords crafted by Osumi Shunpei, including long swords (tachi) and short swords (tantō). The museum regularly hosts thematic exhibitions such as "Great Swords," presenting the beauty and artistry of the blade from multiple perspectives.

The museum offers sword-making demonstrations, traditional costume experiences, and sword-related craft workshops, enabling visitors to understand the actual production process. English-language pamphlets are provided to accommodate international visitors.
