Nejo Castle is a historic castle in Tōhoku dating from the Built 1334 (Kenmu 1), abandoned 1627 (Kan'ei 4), whose lord was Nanbu Moroyuki.
Overview
Nejo Castle was built in 1334 by Nanbu Moroyuki at the opening of the Nanboku-chō period. Located in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, it served as a major stronghold of the Nambu clan for approximately 300 years. Following the 1590 Odawara Campaign, the castle remained operational under Toyotomi and Tokugawa rule until its abandonment in 1627, when the Hachinohe branch of the Nanbu was transferred to Tōno. Designated as a National Historic Site in 1941 and selected as Japan's 100 Famous Castles (No. 5) in 2006, archaeological excavations from 1983-1994 revealed the structure of this medieval mountain fortress. Today, the site operates as Shiseki Nejo no Hiroba (Historic Nejo Plaza), featuring reconstructed buildings and exhibitions.
