Kunitomo Firearms Museum

The Kunitomo Firearms Museum, located in Kunitomo, Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, is a museum facility that systematically conveys the smithing techniques and history of Kunitomo Village, which flourished as one of Japan's premier gun-manufacturing centers from the Sengoku through Edo periods. Kunitomo Village adopted gun-manufacturing techniques that arrived from Tanegashima Island in the mid-16th century, developing into a production center so prominent it earned the designation "One of the Three Great Gun-Manufacturing Centers" alongside Sakai and Negoro. Under the patronage of daimyo such as Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Kunitomo smiths established tanegashima manufacturing techniques grounded in traditional blade-smithing methods, occupying a unique position in Japan's weapons-craftsmanship history.

The museum's collection encompasses not only gun-manufacturing tools, tanegashima specimens, technical drawings, and historical documents transmitted within Kunitomo Village, but also artifacts exemplifying Edo-period precision mechanical craftsmanship—including the reflecting telescope and air gun independently created by Kunitomo Ikkansai in the early 19th century.
