Museum Overview
The Tamba Sasayama Municipal History and Art Museum utilizes the former Sasayama District Court building (a Meiji-era Western-style structure, designated as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property) in the castle town of Sasayama (now Tamba Sasayama) and opened in 1982 (Showa 57). Sasayama Castle was constructed in 1609 (Keicho 14) under orders from Tokugawa Ieyasu and flourished as the castle town of the Tamba Sasayama Domain (ruled by the Aoyama and Matsudaira families, among others) throughout the Edo period. The museum houses and displays arms and decorative arts connected to the Sasayama Domain, functioning as a facility that broadly introduces the samurai culture and crafts culture of the Tamba region.
Swords and Armor
The sword collection at the museum centers on katana, sword fittings, and armor related to successive Sasayama Domain lords. The Tamba region has long been a place where sword smiths were active, nurturing a distinctive regional sword culture known as the 'Tamba tradition' (Tamba-den). Armor and sword fittings designated as Important Cultural Property are also held, allowing appreciation of high-quality samurai cultural artifacts befitting a castle town. Particularly valuable are the uchigatana koshirae with refined metalwork decoration details, and the wakizashi koshirae favored by daimyo in the Edo period—exemplary instances that speak to the high level of metalworking and maki-e techniques of that era and hold considerable value.
Ceramics and Crafts
The art section features extensive collections of Tamba ware (one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns), allowing comprehensive viewing of the transformation of Tamba ware from the medieval period to the present. Tamba ware is known for its unpretentious warmth of clay and simple beauty, and was highly valued in the mingei (folk art) movement. The museum also houses and displays a wide range of archaeological materials, historical documents, paintings, and crafts from the Tamba region, allowing visitors to experience comprehensively the history and culture of Tamba Sasayama.
Sasayama Castle and Castle Town Exploration
Ideally located adjacent to the ruins of Sasayama Castle's secondary citadel (Ninomaru), the museum can be visited together with the Sasayama Castle Great Hall (reconstructed). Visitors can explore the 'Kawara-cho Tsuma-iri Merchant House Group' (a Nationally Designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings) with well-preserved castle-town architecture, and enjoy local cuisine such as black soybean dishes, Tamba chestnuts, and wild boar hot pot. Sasayama is also renowned as a 'land of food,' and particularly during the autumn harvest season, it attracts visitors from across Japan. Convenient access from Osaka and Kobe has made it an increasingly popular day-trip destination in the Kansai region.
