The Muromachi shogunate (1336–1573) established a distinctive ritual system that placed swords at the center of political authority. 明暦（めいれき）

Meireki Era

Meireki (1655-1658) was an early Edo-period era under the fourth shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna. The Great Fire of Meireki (Furisode Fire) of January 1657 destroyed most of Edo, and sword researcher Ito Sanpei estimates roughly 100,000 blades were lost in the city alone. Of the 168 famous swords recorded in the later Kyōhō Meibutsuchō, 69 are noted as lost to the fire, including celebrated blades such as the Uesugi Tachi, Daikoku Tachi, and Hōchō Tōshirō. The scramble to replace this lost stock helped set the stage for the Kanbun Shintō boom that followed.

Suishinshi Masahide, regarded as the founder of shinshinto, was at this point still working in the idiom of the Osaka shinto smiths such as Tsuda Sukehiro and Inoue Shinkai; only later did he advocate the "sword restoration theory" calling for a return to koto methods. His school produced Taikei Naotane and Hosokawa Masayoshi.
