Description
Higo no Kami Teruhiro was a swordsmith active from the Azuchi-Momoyama period into the early Edo period, and a native of Mino Province. He lived around the Keichō era (1596–1615), and is said to have been a forging collaborator of Umetada Myōju.
Teruhiro served Fukushima Masanori, and followed Masanori's transfer from Owari to Hiroshima in Aki; after the Fukushima line ended, he served the Asano clan of Hiroshima Domain. After the Momoyama period, smiths gathered in castle towns and some became domain-retained smiths. The Teruhiro of the Asano clan in Aki is regarded as one of the representative smiths alongside Kunikane of the Date clan of Sendai and Tadayoshi of the Nabeshima clan of Hizen, and the name was passed down through generations until the end of the Edo period.
He is said to have called himself Higo no Kami Fujiwara Teruhiro, and it is said that more than ten smiths in Aki used the name Teruhiro. In the ranking of cutting performance, he is counted among the wazamono.
