MOA Museum

MOA Museum is a private museum on a hillside in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is internationally known as a facility housing Japanese and East Asian art collected by the religious leader Okada Mokichi (1882–1955). The collection of approximately 3,500 objects, including 3 National Treasures and 67 Important Cultural Properties (as of 2023), spans East Asian art, including painting, calligraphy, ceramics, lacquerware, metalwork and sculpture. The location overlooking Sagami Bay and the spatial design of the exhibition building, which is reached by escalator, also attract art enthusiasts from Japan and abroad.

Because it is located in the resort setting of Atami's hot springs, the museum serves both day visitors and overnight guests as a core of “cultural tourism” that combines hot springs, dining and art appreciation. It includes a reconstruction, based on historical sources, of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's “Golden Tea Room,” as well as the tea houses “Ippaku-an” and “Shōtei,” and its facilities for experiencing the culture of tea are very extensive.
