Toyota City Local History Museum

The Toyota City Local History Museum is a municipal museum specializing in the collection and display of history, folk culture, and nature of Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture (formerly Komō City), and is located in Kosakaomoto-cho, Toyota City. It is known for its collections related to the former Komō Domain—including materials on castle-town and village culture, as well as swords, armor, and sword fittings associated with early-modern samurai culture—and is one of the most important repositories of Japanese sword–related cultural properties in eastern Aichi Prefecture.

The former Komō Domain was governed by the Naitō clan, a fudai daimyo (hereditary vassal) house, and functioned as one of the centers of samurai culture in the Owari and Mikawa regions throughout the Edo period. The museum's collections of swords and armor consist primarily of pieces transmitted through the former Komō Domain lords (the Naitō family) and regional samurai and priestly families, and possess high scholarly value as materials directly conveying the samurai culture of the Tōkai region. Among the museum's collection of swords are works designated as cultural properties by Aichi Prefecture, and the collections receive attention from both local history scholars and sword enthusiasts.

The permanent exhibition systematically displays the history of the Toyota region from the Jōmon period through the modern era, with displays of swords and armor featured in the chapter on samurai society. The spring and autumn special exhibitions occasionally feature themes related to early-modern samurai culture and swords, and the facility functions as a venue to comprehensively understand the region's samurai culture.

Toyota City is known worldwide as the corporate castle-town of Toyota Motor Corporation, and the Local History Museum, as an institution conveying the historical depth of the city's early-modern castle-town and samurai culture, serves as an essential venue presenting the image of Toyota before the automobile industry. Its location, approximately one hour by car or train from Nagoya City, also makes it suitable for day-trip visitors from the Chūkyō region.
