Osaka Summer Campaign

The Osaka Summer Campaign of 1615 brought Japan's Sengoku period to a decisive close. After the inconclusive Winter Campaign of 1614, Tokugawa Ieyasu exploited the peace terms to fill Osaka Castle's outer moats, then launched a second assault the following spring.

Sanada Yukimura (Nobushige), one of the most celebrated commanders in the Toyotomi garrison, led a suicidal charge against Ieyasu's headquarters on May 7, 1615. His assault nearly overwhelmed the Tokugawa position and reportedly drove Ieyasu to contemplate suicide. Though the numerical odds proved insurmountable, Yukimura's death in battle earned him the accolade "Japan's greatest warrior" even from his enemies.

Swords are central to the legends of this battle. The Muramasa blade — feared by the Tokugawa as a cursed sword — was associated with Toyotomi commanders in popular culture, giving the last stand a mythic dimension. The famous sword Ichigo Hitofuri (by Yoshimitsu), believed to have been among Toyotomi Hideyoshi's treasures, reportedly survived the burning of Osaka Castle as a charred relic and is now preserved at Nishi Honganji in Kyoto.

With the deaths of Hideyori and his mother Yodo-dono in the burning castle, the Toyotomi lineage ended. The Edo shogunate that followed transformed sword culture: where Sengoku blades were tested on battlefields, Edo-period swords became markers of rank, ritual objects, and art. The transition from weapon to symbol began the day Osaka Castle's flames were extinguished.
