Overview
Overview
Tottori Prefectural Museum is a prefectural museum standing within the Tottori Castle site at the foot of Mt. Hisamatsu in Tottori City. When it was newly established in 1972, it received the materials of the Ikeda family of the Tottori domain that had been kept by the Tottori Prefectural Library, and these form the core of its important collection.
Collections
The museum holds the Tottori domain administrative records, regarded as among the finest daimyo family archives in Japan, as well as art materials such as paintings, ceramics and crafts. Materials related to the Ikeda family include swords and arms, and exhibitions have presented, for example, an early Edo period blade and armor associated with a domain lord. Displays change according to the exhibition program.
The Tottori Domain and the Ikeda Family
The Tottori domain was ruled by the Ikeda family during the Edo period, with the castle town of Tottori as its political and cultural center. The domain records concretely convey the governance and daily life of samurai society and are used for both research and exhibition.
Surroundings
The museum lies in the Tottori Castle area, overlooking Mt. Hisamatsu. A visit combines well with a walk around the castle ruins and offers a look at domain history and warrior culture.
