Yamagata Hometown Museum (Bunshokan)

The Yamagata Hometown Museum (Bunshokan) is a historical and cultural institution housed in the former Yamagata Prefectural Government Building and Prefectural Assembly Hall, constructed in 1916 (Taisho 5). The building is designated as a National Important Cultural Property and features English Renaissance Revival architecture, within which exhibits conveying Yamagata Prefecture's history and culture are displayed.

The museum's noteworthy sword-related collections are rooted in the samurai culture of the Mogami clan, Uesugi clan, and Tokugawa hereditary daimyo who ruled Dewa Province (present-day Yamagata and Akita prefectures). Most notably, Mogami Yoshiaki was a Sengoku-period daimyo who distinguished himself fighting for the Eastern Army at the Battle of Sekigahara, and his personal effects and related artifacts remain abundant throughout Yamagata Prefecture. Displays of swords, armor, and artifacts connected to Mogami Yoshiaki can be understood more deeply through both this museum and its neighboring facility, the Mogami Yoshiaki History Museum (located in Yamagata City).

Yamagata Prefecture has long been known as a center of sword-smithing; the swords produced by Dewa Province swordsmiths are recognized in sword-collecting circles as "Bushu-mono" (Dewa Province swords) and hold an established place in the field. The Hometown Museum serves the role of comprehensively introducing both local sword-making culture and samurai culture from a regional history perspective.

The distinctive experience of encountering Japanese swords and samurai culture within a National Important Cultural Property of English Renaissance Revival architectural style, combined with the building's own tourist appeal, has established it as a vital cultural destination in Yamagata tourism.
