Overview
Overview
The Morioka Historical Cultural Museum is a municipal history and culture facility in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, adjacent to the Morioka Castle Ruins Park (Iwate Park). It presents materials handed down by the Nanbu family, lords of the Morioka domain during the Edo period, along with the history and culture of Morioka.
Exhibitions
The History and Culture Zone on the second floor centers on treasures of the Nanbu family, drawing on a collection of roughly 40,000 items. Materials related to the Nanbu family offer valuable clues about samurai life and domain administration, and give visitors interested in arms and swords a good opportunity to learn about the warrior culture of the Morioka domain. Exhibits are rotated, so please check official information beforehand if you wish to see a particular item.
The Morioka Domain and the Nanbu Family
The Nanbu family ruled the Morioka domain (Nanbu domain) throughout the Edo period, and Morioka developed as its castle town. The museum stands in Uchimaru, at the heart of that town, and serves as a base for conveying the history of the lord's family.
Surroundings
The museum is next to the Morioka Castle Ruins Park, so it combines easily with a walk among the surviving stone walls. The first floor is free to enter and welcomes both residents and tourists.
