Kagoshima City Museum of Art

Kagoshima City Museum of Art stands adjacent to the ruins of Tsurumaru Castle (Kagoshima Castle), the residence of the Shimazu clan — lords of Satsuma domain and one of the longest-reigning daimyo families in Japanese history, having governed southern Kyushu for over 700 years. The museum collects and exhibits fine art alongside materials that illuminate the warrior culture and historical context of the Shimazu domain.

Satsuma holds an important place in nihonto history. Satsuma-den (Satsuma-tradition) swords — produced by the Shimazu family's retained swordsmiths — developed a distinctive character by incorporating Sōshū-tradition techniques, resulting in blades prized for their powerful, practical character. The Shimazu family were dedicated sword collectors and patrons, assembling a collection commensurate with their seven-century rule.

The museum's holdings include paintings, crafts, and historical materials reflecting the warrior culture of the Satsuma domain, and notably documents related to the Seinan War (1877) — the last great samurai uprising, in which Saigō Takamori led the Satsuma clan against the Meiji government's conscript army. This final conflict saw the use of traditional swords alongside firearms, marking the historical close of the sword-bearing samurai era.

The Tsurumaru Castle ruins precinct — also home to Reimeikan (Kagoshima Prefectural Museum of Culture) and the nearby Shiroyama observation point — forms a unified cultural landscape. The combination of the art museum, Reimeikan, Saigō Takamori's final cave, and the panoramic view of Sakurajima makes this an exceptional setting for immersion in Satsuma warrior culture.
