In 1221, Retired Emperor Go-Toba raised arms to overthrow Hōjō Yoshitoki, who held the real power of the Kamakura shogunate. The bakufu army, united by an address from Hōjō Masako, mobilized an overwhelming force and marched on Kyoto. In just over a month, the imperial court's armies were annihilated, and Go-Toba was exiled to Oki Island. This was the Jōkyū Uprising.
**Go-Toba as a Sword-Emperor**
To understand the Jōkyū Uprising, one cannot ignore Go-Toba's profound devotion to swords. Go-Toba (1180–1239) was celebrated as a master of poetry, but above all he was Japan's preeminent "sword-emperor"—one who collected blades, authenticated them, and even forged them himself.
The retired emperor established a forge at the imperial palace and summoned master swordsmiths from across the realm, reportedly taking hammer in hand himself. This system was known as Go-ban Kaji (imperial rotation smithing). Master swordsmiths from throughout the realm were summoned to court on a rotating annual basis and forged imperial swords under the retired emperor's direction. Swords created with Go-Toba's involvement came to be called "Go-Toba-in Gozaku" (Blades of Retired Emperor Go-Toba) and were marked with an imperial chrysanthemum—sacred works passed down through the ages.
These Go-Toba Gozaku blades, known as "chrysanthemum single-stroke" (kiku ichimonji), survive in small numbers today and are held in museums at home and abroad as Important Cultural Properties and National Treasures. Their peaks—unlike the pragmatic weapons of the warrior class—embody "the purity of chrysanthemum-water," bearing witness to the retired emperor's refined sensibility.
**Historical Significance of the Go-ban Kaji System**
The Go-ban Kaji system established by Go-Toba held epoch-making importance in the history of Japanese sword culture.
First, this system gathered the finest swordsmiths from across the realm in one place, where they competed, influenced one another, and shared their craft. Year by year, master swordsmiths from each region—Bizen (Okayama), Yamashiro (Kyoto), Yamato (Nara), and Sagami (Kanagawa), each with its own tradition—entered the court and displayed techniques of the highest caliber. Under the retired emperor's direct guidance, swords were created that fused the strengths of each tradition.
Second, this system formally established "the deep bond between the imperial household and the sword." When the emperor and retired emperor themselves "created" blades, the sword transcended being a mere weapon and became a sacred cultural object of permanent standing. This heritage was passed to later court culture, eventually leading to the formation of the imperial sword collection.
Third, the Go-ban Kaji system elevated the social standing of the swordsmiths themselves. To serve the retired emperor was the highest honor a smith could achieve, and their works were valued as "cultural properties" distinct from warriors' swords. In later sword authentication, works from the Go-ban Kaji system received exceptionally high evaluation.
**The Jōkyū Uprising and the Political Meaning of Swords**
The immediate cause of the Jōkyū Uprising lay in Go-Toba's political ambitions, but beneath lay a power struggle between the court and the bakufu. For Go-Toba, the sword was not merely a passion but a symbol of military power—a "weapon of authority." To command the finest blades through the Go-ban Kaji system was to symbolically assert the court's superiority over the warrior class.
Yet in actual military strength, the court's armies fell far short of the bakufu. Within weeks of raising arms, an overwhelming force from the Kamakura shogunate descended on Kyoto, and the court's forces were defeated across the realm. Go-Toba was exiled to Oki Island (in present-day Shimane Prefecture), where he spent some eighteen years in exile before his death.
After the uprising, the bakufu severely curtailed the court's power and stationed the Rokuharazansui (administrative outpost) in Kyoto to keep the court under surveillance. This historical turning point—the establishment of warrior rule—was simultaneously the moment when the center of gravity in sword culture shifted from the court to the warriors.
**Kamakura Sword Culture After Jōkyū**
After the Jōkyū Uprising, warrior culture centered on Kamakura blossomed. In Sagami's Kamakura, a distinctive sword technique known as the "Sagami tradition" (Sōshu-den) came into flower. Among the master swordsmiths summoned to the retired emperor's service was a lineage of Sagami smiths who, having honed their craft under Go-Toba's tutelage, carried those refined techniques back to Kamakura and developed them further. At the apex of this lineage stood "Masamune."
Masamune was an early 14th-century master smith of Sagami's Kamakura, leaving behind numerous works regarded as "the finest achievements in Japanese sword craft." The jinie (hardening texture) visible in Masamune's blades is said to have inherited the lineage of the Go-ban Kaji system while simultaneously fusing the pragmatism of the warrior class with artistry at the highest level.
The Jōkyū Uprising was a political event marking the warrior class's military victory, yet the sword culture it spawned—the artistic legacy of Go-Toba's creations and the technical maturity of Kamakura warrior swords—became the foundation of the Japanese sword's golden age. The passion of Go-Toba, who loved and forged blades, is said to have continued even in exile on Oki Island, and his spirit lives on in the swords he created.
