On the night of July 8, 1864, Shinsengumi commander Kondō Isami led a four-man advance party into the Ikedaya inn in Kyoto, where loyalist activists from Chōshū and other domains were secretly meeting. What followed was the most famous sword duel of the Bakumatsu era.
The Shinsengumi's elite swordsmen brought their signature blades. Kondō Isami carried the Nagasone Kotetsu — a blade by the celebrated Edo-period smith Nagasone Okisato — though later scholars have debated whether it was genuine. Okita Sōji wielded the Yamato no Kami Yasusada, a confirmed surviving Bakumatsu blade now held in private collection. Hijikata Toshizō's Izumi no Kami Kanesada survives in Hino City, Tokyo, where it was preserved by Hijikata's family.
The tight quarters of the inn proved costly for the activists. Seven or eight were killed; many more were arrested. The Chōshū-led plot to seize Kyoto was shattered. Yet records show the incident left Shinsengumi blades severely damaged, requiring extensive repair — a reminder that swords, even famous ones, were consumable tools in real combat.
Politically, the Ikedaya raid backfired. Outrage in Chōshū triggered the Kinmon Incident just a month later, when Chōshū forces stormed Kyoto itself. The three Shinsengumi leaders met grim ends in the Boshin War: Kondō was beheaded, Hijikata died at Hakodate, Okita succumbed to tuberculosis. Their swords endure as relics of a generation of swordsmen who lived — and died — by the blade.
