After weeks of forging and shaping the blade, it is heated to high temperature and rapidly cooled to create the hamon—this single moment's decision and technique determine the sword's quality. If it fails, all previous steps must be redone.
Before this high-stakes hardening, many smiths perform a preliminary hardening operation called "trial quenching (shiyaki)." Trial quenching involves actually hardening scrap pieces or test samples cut from the same batch of tamahagane as the actual blade, or practice small blades, to confirm how the hamon emerges, how the steel responds, and the state of the cooling water (or oil).
In other words, this is a "dress rehearsal before the main event," and based on these results, the final operation conditions are adjusted.
Even tamahagane produced from the same tatara furnace varies in carbon content depending on the location within the furnace, the type of charcoal, and the quality of the iron sand. This difference becomes a factor that changes the optimal hardening temperature.
In trial quenching, scrap or test pieces from the same batch as the steel to be used are hardened to experientially confirm "at what temperature does this material produce the most beautiful hamon?" Since smiths judge temperature by the fire color of the furnace—the color of heated steel—a trial quench with the same material becomes a precious opportunity to adjust the sense of "this color means it's time to harden."
In hardening, the temperature and composition of the medium (cooling agent) that rapidly cools the blade greatly affect hamon formation. In traditional water hardening (mizuyaki), the temperature, hardness, and purity of the water are important. By performing a trial quench, you can confirm "what kind of hamon appears with today's water conditions."
Especially between summer and winter, the temperature of the cooling water differs, causing a difference in rapid cooling speed. Even with the same technique, the hamon appearance changes with the season, so trial quenching is also effective for adapting to climate changes.
The thickness, application method, and drying state of the clay in "clay placement (tsuchioki)" that creates the hamon can also be confirmed through trial quenching. Clay with the same composition as the actual work is applied to test pieces, and after hardening, it is verified whether the hamon appears as intended.
Especially when aiming for special hamons like choji, gunome, or suguha, or when hardening unusual areas like muneyaki, pre-understanding the relationship between the clay placement pattern and the actual hamon that emerges greatly increases the success rate of the actual work.
The test pieces used in trial quenching are also called "test iron" or "test steel (tameshigane)." The basic method is to use scrap pieces from making the actual blade or small pieces cut from tamahagane of the same batch.
The shape can be simple flat or rod-like; there is no need to replicate an actual blade shape. However, if you want to confirm the effect of clay placement, it is better to shape it so that the edge side and spine side can be distinguished.
The procedure for trial quenching is the same as the actual work.

Trial quenching is a beneficial step, but not all smiths perform it. Among experienced smiths, some intuitively grasp the state of materials, seasons, and furnace conditions from years of accumulation and proceed with the actual work without trial quenching.
Some smiths have a craftsmanship-based sense that "if I do a trial quench, my tension will relax." They believe that the tension of one final attempt in the actual work heightens concentration and leads to better judgment.
On the other hand, many master smiths actively recommend trial quenching to their apprentices (smiths in training). Learning the material's response experientially through trial quenching, where failure is permitted, becomes a shortcut to mastering the technique.
Some smiths keep records of their trial quenching results. They record the batch of material used, furnace condition, water temperature, date of implementation, impressions of the resulting hamon, and so on in notebooks, which they refer to during the next sword-making.
Such records function as the craftsperson's own "experience database," and by accumulating them over many years, the correlations between materials, seasons, and techniques become visible. Among modern smiths, some have begun to manage such records digitally.
Trial quenching is an optional step, but smiths who perform it carefully embody "integrity toward each sword." Understanding of materials, humility toward technique, responsibility for the success of the actual work—these are all contained in the humble process of trial quenching. The beauty and quality of Japanese swords are supported by the accumulation of such invisible processes.
