After weeks of forging and shaping the blade, it is heated to high temperature and cooled rapidly all at once to produce the hamon (blade pattern)—this momentary decision and operation determines the sword's quality. If it fails, all the previous processes must be repeated.
Prior to this high-tension yaki-ire process, many swordsmiths perform a preliminary yaki-ire operation called "tameshiyaki" (trial hardening). Trial hardening involves actually performing yaki-ire using steel pieces or small trial blades made from the same material and carbon content as the production blade, and confirming the appearance of the hamon, the steel's reaction, and the state of the cooling water (or oil).
In other words, it is a "dress rehearsal" before the actual production run, and based on these results, the conditions for the final operation are adjusted.
Even tamahagane produced from the same tatara furnace will have different carbon content depending on the position within the furnace, the type of charcoal, and the quality of the iron sand. Generally, steel for swords has a carbon content of approximately 0.6-1.2%, and this difference changes the optimal yaki-ire temperature.
In trial hardening, yaki-ire is performed using scrap material or test pieces from the same lot as the steel to be used in production, to experientially confirm "at what temperature does this material produce the most beautiful hamon." Since swordsmiths judge temperature by the hi-iro (color of the heated iron) of the furnace, trial hardening with the same material becomes an opportunity to adjust the sense of timing—"when the color reaches this point, it's time for yaki-ire."
In yaki-ire, the temperature and composition of the medium (cooling agent) used to rapidly cool the blade greatly affect hamon formation. In traditional mizu-yaki (water hardening), water temperature, hardness, and salt concentration are critical. By performing trial hardening, one can confirm "what kind of hamon will appear with today's water conditions."
Particularly between summer and winter, the temperature of cooling water differs, resulting in different rapid-cooling speeds. Even with the same operation, the way the hamon appears changes by season, so trial hardening is also effective as a way to adapt to climate changes.
The thickness of clay, application method, and drying state of the "tsuchIoki" (clay application) that creates the hamon can also be confirmed through trial hardening. Clay with the same composition as used in production is applied to test pieces, and after yaki-ire, one verifies whether the hamon appears as intended.
Particularly when aiming for special hamon patterns (choji, gunome, mina-yaki, etc.), understanding in advance the relationship between the clay application pattern and the actual hamon that appears significantly increases the success rate of the final operation.
The test pieces used in trial hardening are also called "tameshi-tetsu" or "shittetsu." The basic practice is to use scrap material left over from the production blade or small pieces cut from tamahagane of the same lot.
The shape can be simple—plate or rod form—there is no need to reproduce the actual blade shape. However, if one wants to confirm the effect of tsuchIoki, it is better to give the test piece a shape that allows distinction between the edge and spine sides.
The procedure for trial hardening is the same as for production. It follows the steps: heating → clay application → reheating → cooling, after which the cross-section and surface of the resulting test piece are observed. Before the actual production, one confirms whether the hamon is uniform, whether nie appear well, and whether there are any cracks or chips on the edge.
Although trial hardening is a beneficial process, not all swordsmiths perform it. Among experienced swordsmiths, there are those who, through years of accumulated experience, intuitively grasp the material conditions, seasonal factors, and furnace state, and proceed to the actual production without trial hardening.
Some swordsmiths hold a craftsman's view that "if I perform trial hardening, my sense of tension will relax." They believe that the high-tension environment of the single decisive attempt actually heightens concentration and leads to better judgment.
On the other hand, many master swordsmiths actively recommend trial hardening to their apprentices (aspiring swordsmiths). Learning the material's response experientially through trial hardening, where failure is permissible, is a shortcut to acquiring the technique.
Some swordsmiths keep records of their trial hardening results. They record the lot of material used, the furnace conditions, water temperature, date of trial, and impressions of the resulting hamon in notebooks or diaries, referring to them during future sword-making.
These records function as a "swordsmith's database," and as they accumulate over many years, the correlations between material, season, and technique become apparent. Among contemporary swordsmiths, some have begun managing their records digitally.
Although trial hardening is a step that can be skipped, swordsmiths who implement it carefully embody "sincerity toward each individual sword." Understanding of materials, humility toward technique, and sense of responsibility for the success of the final product—all these are contained in the humble process of trial hardening. The beauty and quality of Japanese swords are supported by the accumulation of such invisible processes.
