In normal hardening, the hamon is concentrated on the blade side (the surface facing the blade edge), while the spine side is kept in a state close to soft iron. This is the basic design philosophy of the Japanese sword: "hard blade, resilient spine." By incorporating both a hard blade and a resilient spine into a single blade, it achieves both sharpness and resistance to breaking.
However, in some swords, an intentional hardening of the spine called "muneayaki" can be observed. Muneayaki is a technique in which a small amount of hardening clay is applied to the spine side during the clay coating stage (before hardening), creating hardened hamon-like patterns on the spine during the quenching process.
The hardened portion appearing on the spine is also called "muneayaki" and, like the hamon, becomes an aesthetic focal point accompanied by nie and nioi.
The reasons for applying muneayaki can be broadly organized into three categories.
By creating visible patterns on the spine, it adds another perspective to sword appreciation. With nie and small nie brilliance appearing not only on the hamon but also on the spine, the overall appearance of the sword changes depending on the angle of light. In particular, among swords from the ko-to period (Kamakura to Sengoku period), masterpieces that actively incorporated muneayaki as a design element still exist.
There is an interpretation that hardening the spine increases its durability against muneuchi (striking techniques using the spine), since the spine itself becomes hardened when muneayaki is applied. In grappling and striking sword techniques before the early modern period, techniques using the spine side have been transmitted, and it is suggested that muneayaki may have been a response to such practical combat needs. However, this interpretation is contested among scholars, and there is a strong view that the technique was developed for aesthetic purposes before practical ones. It should be understood as a point of discussion on which no definitive conclusion has yet been reached.
The Japanese sword, while being a weapon, was also a tool imbued with spiritual meaning. It is suggested that in certain regions, there existed a folk belief that hardening the spine would imbue the sword with special power, and muneayaki may have been chosen in the production of swords for temple offerings or religious ceremonies. However, historical documentation is limited, and this remains only one interpretation.
Achieving muneayaki requires special handling during the clay application stage (the placement of hardening clay on the blade before quenching).
The thickness of clay and post-quenching state differ for each area between normal clay application and muneayaki clay application as follows.

Since the cooling reaction varies depending on the batch of tamahagane and carbon content, many swordsmiths perform test quench beforehand to confirm the response of the spine before proceeding to the final quench.
The technical challenge is "controlling rapid cooling from two directions." When hardening both the blade side and spine side, heat escapes at different rates from the left and right of the blade, making it extremely difficult to control the deformation of the curve (sori). This is one reason why muneayaki never became a standard technique. Even for skilled swordsmiths, considerable experience is required to finish the curve of the blade as intended when applying muneayaki.
Muneayaki tended to be preferred by certain schools and production regions.
Among works by representative Soshu school smiths like Masamune and their disciples, some display nie patterns resembling muneayaki. While cases where the characteristic features of the Soshu school—oonie (large nie) and nie crumbling—extend to the spine area are considered technically distinct from intentional muneayaki, it is believed that successor works developed the beauty of such natural nie crumbling as a design element.
Swords with muneayaki from the Bizen school (present-day Okayama Prefecture) also survive today. In particular, some tachi from the late Kamakura through Nanboku-Cho periods retain nie patterns resembling muneayaki.
Among certified modern swordsmiths, some practice muneayaki. However, in modern times, muneayaki falls within the category of "special orders" and is not included in the standard sword-making routine. When a patron requests muneayaki, it is customary for thorough consultation with the swordsmith to take place beforehand.
To appreciate muneayaki, tilt the blade using a light source (a bulb or sunlight) and illuminate the spine side in the same manner as viewing the hamon.
In swords where muneayaki has been applied with high quality, the spine nie shines uniformly and brightly, creating a vista that evokes dialogue with the hamon. In contrast, a failed muneayaki exhibits rough nie or edge-splitting defects. The quality of muneayaki is often discussed as one indicator of a smith's skill level in appreciation contexts.
Muneayaki is a technique that deliberately deviates from the design philosophy of the Japanese sword—"hard blade, resilient spine." The swordsmiths who chose this technique imbued their swords not only with functionality but also with beauty and spirituality. Even today, muneayaki is treated with respect as a rare and advanced technique. By paying attention not only to the hamon but also to the spine, the amount of information a single sword conveys is greatly expanded.
