In a standard quench, the hamon is concentrated on the edge side (the surface facing the blade point), while the mune side is kept in a state close to soft iron. This is the fundamental design of the Japanese sword: "the edge is hard, the mune is resilient."
However, in some swords, "muneaki" (hardening of the mune), where hardening is intentionally applied to the mune, can be observed. Muneaki is a technique where, during the clay coating (tsuchoki) before quenching, a small amount of hardening clay is applied to the mune side as well, creating a hardened edge-pattern appearance on the mune during quenching.
The hardened part appearing on the mune is called "muneaki" and, like the hamon, features "nie" and "nioi," making it an important viewing point.
There are primarily three reasons why muneaki is applied.
Creating appearance (keshiki) on the mune side adds more perspectives to sword appreciation. With nie and ko-nie luster appearing not only on the hamon but also on the mune, the sword displays different characteristics depending on the angle of the light source. In particular, among old swords (Kamakura to Sengoku period), there exist masterpieces that actively incorporated muneaki as a design element.
When muneaki is applied, the mune hardens, which may increase durability against muneuchi (striking techniques using the mune). In grappling and striking sword techniques before the Edo period, there were also techniques using the mune side, and it is possible that muneaki answered such practical demands. However, this interpretation has various theories, and many scholars argue that design preceded practical application.
The Japanese sword was both a weapon and a tool with spiritual significance. It is said that in some regions, there was a folk belief that hardening the mune increased the sword's "spiritual energy." It is pointed out that there may have been cases where muneaki was chosen in the creation of swords donated to shrines or divine swords.
To realize muneaki, special measures are necessary at the stage of clay placement (the application of hardening clay to the blade before quenching).
In standard clay placement, thin hardening clay is applied to the edge side (approximately 5–15 mm from the blade point), and thick clay is applied to the remaining areas (including the mune side). During quenching, the thin clay areas are rapidly cooled and harden into the hamon, while the thick clay areas cool more slowly and do not harden.
When applying muneaki, this principle is also applied to the mune side. By applying thin clay to part of the mune (or removing clay), the mune is designed to also undergo rapid cooling and hardening during quenching.
The technical challenge is "controlling rapid cooling from two directions." When hardening is applied to both the edge side and the mune side, heat is lost at different rates from the left and right sides of the blade, making control of the curvature (sori) deformation extremely difficult. This is one reason why muneaki did not become a standard technique. Even skilled bladesmiths require considerable experience to finish the blade's curvature as intended with muneaki.
Muneaki was preferred in certain schools and regions.
Some works by Soshu tradition's representative bladesmith Masamune and his students exhibit muneaki-like nie patterns. While cases where "oo-nie" (large nie) or "nie-kuzure" (nie collapse), characteristic of the Soshu tradition, extend to the mune are different from muneaki, later works that incorporated this as a design element do exist.
Swords with muneaki from the Bizen tradition (present-day Okayama Prefecture) still exist. In particular, some tachi from the late Kamakura through Nanboku-Chō period retain nie patterns close to muneaki.
Among modern certified bladesmiths, there are those who work with muneaki. However, in modern times, muneaki falls into the category of "special orders" and is not part of the standard blade-forging routine. When a customer requests muneaki, thorough consultations with the bladesmith are conducted beforehand.
To appreciate muneaki, angle the blade using a light source (a bulb or sunlight) and illuminate the mune side in the same manner as when viewing the hamon.
In swords where muneaki is well executed, the nie on the mune shines uniformly and brightly, revealing a landscape that creates a dialogue with the hamon. In contrast, poorly executed muneaki shows rough nie or defects resembling edge chipping. The quality of muneaki is also an indicator of a bladesmith's skill level.
Muneaki is a technique that intentionally deviates from the design philosophy of the Japanese sword: "the edge is hard, the mune is resilient." Bladesmiths who chose this technique imbued their swords with not only functionality but also beauty and spiritual meaning. Even today, muneaki is treated with respect as a specialized and advanced technique.
