The practice of determining where and how much thickness—called "niku (niku)"—to leave in various parts of the cross-section is known as "nikuoki (nikuoki)."
When viewed from the side in cross-section, a Japanese sword has a shape close to a diamond, symmetrical from left to right, with the shinogi (the ridgeline running along the center of the blade) at its apex. The blade tapers toward the kissaki (edge), while the mune (spine) curves differently. The surface from the shinogi toward the kissaki is divided into the "shnogiJi (shinogi surface)" and "hiraji (flat surface)," and the nikuoki design targets the "niku thickness" and "curvature" of each of these.
The quality of nikuoki can be felt the moment you hold the sword in your hand—as "weight presence," "center of gravity position," and "tactile sensation when swinging (hand feel)." To the trained eye, it is also visually apparent in the "yokobikari (lateral shine)"—the band of light that appears on the flat surface when the blade is tilted.
The thinner the niku placement toward the kissaki (thin edge), the better the initial cutting-in. A thin kissaki has less resistance, making the "cut-in" smooth when beginning to cut through an object. However, if too thin, the kissaki becomes brittle and prone to "hagane hagane (edge chipping)" when striking hard objects.
Conversely, when niku is left thick near the kissaki (thick edge), it resists chipping and has high durability, but the "cut-in" requires more force. Swords for actual combat tend to favor the latter, while swords for appreciation or iaido often prioritize the former.
Bladesmiths design this balance by considering "purpose" and "material strength." When tamahagane has high carbon content and is hard, thin niku can withstand the stress; when carbon content is low, thick niku is used to ensure durability.
The thickness of nikuoki directly affects blade rigidity. When niku is abundant near the shinogi, the cross-sectional "moment of resistance" becomes large, and the blade becomes less likely to flex under bending forces.
Conversely, removing too much niku overall causes the blade to bend easily under cutting pressure—the lateral pressure applied to the blade during cutting. Excessive "flexing" can negatively affect the hamon (hardness pattern) and, in the worst case, lead to blade fracture.
The balance of flexibility and rigidity in a Japanese sword is determined by three elements: "sori (curvature)," "nikuoki," and "number of folding-forge repetitions." Skilled bladesmiths integrate these three factors to complete the blade.
The thickness of nikuoki changes the total weight of the sword and the position of its center of gravity.
When niku is abundant in the monouchi (the area about one-third from the kissaki)—the primary cutting zone—the center of gravity moves closer to the edge, creating the sensation of "power in the downward swing." This suits a cutting style emphasizing downward slashes.
Conversely, the more niku remains near the shinogi or near the hand (tsubaomot), the more the center of gravity shifts toward the hand, resulting in faster swing speed and better maneuverability. In practices like iaido that emphasize quick drawing strikes, a hand-weighted center of gravity is often preferred.
In sword appreciation, "yokobikari (lateral shine)" is a key way to assess nikuoki. When the blade is tilted at a shallow angle against fluorescent light or sunlight, a lateral band of light reflection appears on the hiraji. The width, shape, and smoothness of this band indicate the quality of nikuoki.
A yokobikari band that is uniform, wide, and fades naturally at the edges is evaluated as "abundant nikuoki." Conversely, a band that is narrow, uneven, and disappears abruptly is viewed as "sparse nikuoki" or "uneven nikuoki."
Koto-period (Kamakura through Sengoku period) tachi swords often display abundant nikuoki, giving the blade a strong "presence." In contrast, swords from the shinto period (early Edo period) onward tend to have increasingly thin nikuoki, reflecting a design shift from practical combat toward appreciation and ceremonial use.
Nikuoki is largely determined during the forging stage but is fine-tuned during the polishing (togi) process. The togishi (polisher), using whetstones to polish the blade surface, reveals the bladesmith's intended nikuoki design and evens out the curved surface of the hiraji.
A skilled togishi interprets "what nikuoki does this bladesmith intend?" and performs polishing to bring out its full potential. For this reason, it is said that "the feel of nikuoki changes" depending on the togishi, even for the same sword. The collaboration between bladesmith and polisher is a crucial factor determining the final quality of nikuoki.
Nikuoki is a technique difficult to observe from outside, yet it is the source of the sensation that something is "different" the moment you hold the sword. This judgment, which affects cutting ability, strength, and weight balance, represents a design decision where the bladesmith's experience and aesthetic sensibility are concentrated. What distinguishes swords called masterpieces is that this invisible design aligns perfectly with the wielder's intent.
