Monouchi refers to a section comprising roughly one-third of the blade measured from the tip and has been traditionally defined as the optimal zone where the edge should make contact when striking and cutting through a target.
More precisely, many schools define monouchi as a zone measuring approximately three sun (roughly 9 cm) back from the tip. For a katana with a blade length of 2 shaku 3 sun (approximately 70 cm), the monouchi zone would correspond to roughly 7 sun to 1 shaku (21–30 cm) from the tip. However, this varies by school and era, and the essential understanding is conceptual—the monouchi is fundamentally "the effective strike zone on the blade's point-side," rather than a strictly defined numerical range.
To understand the concept of monouchi, one must know the measurement system of the Japanese sword. The blade has the following primary measurement points.
Blade length (hanatasa): The distance from the ridge line (munematchi) to the tip (kissaki), commonly called "blade span."
Base width (motohaba): The width between the edge and the spine at the base area (root of the blade), often the widest point of the blade.
Tip width (sakihaba): The blade width near the crossline (yokote), which marks the boundary where monouchi transitions to the tip. This is a crucial visual indicator of monouchi's lower boundary.
Base thickness (motokasane): The blade thickness at the base area (spine thickness).
Tip thickness (sakikasane): The blade thickness near the crossline.
Fukura (curvature): The degree of roundness of the edge at the tip. Whether the tip is "fukura-tsuku" (rounded) or "fukura-karabiru" (acutely pointed) is a key appraisal consideration.
The functionality of monouchi is determined by the balance between "tip width" and "tip thickness." If the tip width is too broad, resistance during cutting increases; if too narrow, structural strength suffers. Improper tip thickness increases the risk of bending and fracture. In appraisal, the ratio of tip width to base width (tip width / base width) is a critical indicator, with characteristic ranges varying by era.
The concept of monouchi and blade shape have evolved over time.
Tachi swords of the Heian to Kamakura period (794–1333): Characterized by pronounced mid-section curvature (koshi-zori) and rounded tips. The blade section corresponding to monouchi was relatively broad, well-suited to sweeping cuts in mounted combat. The tip width / base width ratio was approximately 0.60–0.65, a relatively broad form.
Great tachi (ōdachi) of the Nanboku-chō period (1336–92): Characterized by broad width and shallow depth ("broad-bodied and thin-backed"), with especially wide monouchi sections emphasizing destructive power over cutting sharpness.
Katana of the Muromachi to Azuchi-Momoyama period (1333–1603): As older tachi were remounted as katana, the relative position of monouchi shifted. Newly crafted katana showed a trend toward larger tips (ō-kissaki), expanding the monouchi zone.
Swords of the Edo period (1603–1868): Formal presentation took priority over practical combat use. Both base and tip widths became narrower, and acutely pointed tips (fukura-karabiru) became fashionable. During the Keichō–Kan'ei era, thin-bodied forms with deep curves were particularly popular, making monouchi narrower and sharper. By the Enpo–Genroku period, there was a trend toward broader forms again.
Shinshin-tō swords of the late Edo period (1830–68): Driven by a return to practicality, "revivalist" blades imitating the forms of Kamakura–Nanboku-chō tachi became fashionable, with the tip section including monouchi tending toward broader and heavier forms.
From a martial arts perspective, the concept of monouchi transcends mere nomenclature and connects deeply with sword technique theory.
The Fundamental Principle of "Cutting with Monouchi": Many sword schools adhere to the principle that "the blade should cut using monouchi." Rather than thrusting with the tip, applying the monouchi—the section just before the tip—to the target generates maximum cutting force. This principle has a mechanical basis grounded in the relationship between the blade's resonant frequency and center of gravity.
The Function of the Crossline: The crossline (yokote) is a distinct step-line marking the lower boundary of monouchi. In sword technique, certain schools maintain a division: "below the crossline, use pulling cuts (hikigiri)," while "above the crossline (within monouchi), perform push-cuts and pulling-cuts."
The Alignment of Center of Gravity and Monouchi: The center of gravity in quality Japanese swords is located approximately three sun from the guard, while monouchi lies on the blade's point-side. The blade is designed to create a sensation of "monouchi running" (accelerating via centrifugal force) during the swing, described as "easy to drive" or "minimal lag sensation."
When observing monouchi and surrounding areas during appraisal, experts focus on the following points.
Remounting and Changes to Monouchi: When a sword is remounted from tachi to katana form, the blade length decreases, altering the relative position of monouchi. Additionally, remounting can change the tip width, disrupting the original tip width / base width ratio.
The Condition of the Crossline: The crossline is one of the features most easily obscured by polishing. When the crossline is unclear, it may indicate excessive polishing or polishing technique issues.
Concentration of Blade Chips (Hakobore): In swords that saw actual use, chips and damage typically concentrate on monouchi. This is also evidence of "proper blade use." The location of chips allows appraisers to infer whether the previous owner handled the sword correctly.
The Shape of the Edge Line and Ridge Line (Hamachi and Munematchi): The shape of these transitions varies characteristically by era, region, and school. Combining the form of these transitions with measurements of various blade sections improves the accuracy of dating estimates.
The concept of monouchi symbolizes that the Japanese sword is not merely a blade but a precision instrument integrating cutting mechanics, weight distribution design, and martial arts theory. For appraisers, the condition of monouchi serves as a crucial clue for deciphering the sword's history of use, polishing, and date of manufacture.
