高師直
Shitsuji (Steward) of the Ashikaga Shogunate, Close Aide to Ashikaga Takauji
Description
Life
His birth year is unknown. Born into the Kō family, which had traditionally served as household stewards to the Ashikaga clan, he served closely alongside the brothers Ashikaga Takauji and Ashikaga Tadayoshi. When Takauji founded the Ashikaga (Muromachi) shogunate and became Seii Taishōgun, Moronao was appointed shitsuji (chief steward), supporting the fledgling shogunate together with his clan in both military and civil administration.
Role as Shogunal Steward
As steward, he provided practical support for Takauji's military command and held key posts in the wars against the Southern Court. Within the shogunate, however, a rift grew between his faction and that of Takauji's brother Tadayoshi, who oversaw civil administration, and the conflict between the two camps gradually deepened.
The Kannō Disturbance
Between 1350 and 1351, the rivalry between the Tadayoshi and Moronao factions erupted into a full-scale civil war known as the Kannō Disturbance. Moronao fought on Takauji's side against the Tadayoshi faction, but as his position grew untenable he took Buddhist vows and surrendered.
Death
After his surrender, in 1351, while being escorted toward Kyoto, he was killed along with his brother Moroyasu and other kinsmen by warriors of the Tadayoshi faction. This effectively brought down the Kō family, ending the line of stewards who had supported the shogunate's founding.
Later Reputation
Moronao is remembered as a senior retainer who supported Ashikaga Takauji militarily and administratively during the shogunate's founding years, while also being regarded as the central figure whose rivalry with Tadayoshi triggered the Kannō Disturbance, a conflict emblematic of the turmoil of the Nanboku-chō period.
