Chōsokabe Motochika

Chōsokabe Motochika (1539-1599) was an outstanding warrior who achieved the unification of all of Shikoku during the late Sengoku period, lauded as "the Prodigy of Tosa." His journey from a minor local lord of Tosa Province (present-day Kochi Prefecture) to ruler of all four Shikoku provinces stands as one of the quintessential success stories of the Sengoku era.

Motochika's life was filled with dramatic transformation. In childhood, he was called "Himewako" (Princess Boy) and described as sickly and introverted, but at his first battle at Nagahama (1560), he demonstrated exceptional martial talent that astonished everyone around him. He was a warrior of both literary and martial accomplishments, deeply versed in waka poetry under the cultural influence of the Tosa Ichijo clan, yet pitilessly strategic on the battlefield.

Motochika developed the unique military system called "Ichiryo Gusoku" (one-armored-set system), mobilizing farmers as warriors during the agricultural off-season, providing the mass mobilization capability that formed the foundation of his rise to power. He achieved Shikoku unification in 1585, only to face Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion shortly after. Regarding swords, Motochika promoted the production of practical battle swords in Tosa and is said to have favored reliable Bizen-school blades himself.
