Ōsumi Shunpei

Ōsumi Toshihira (大隅俊平) stands as the foremost contemporary swordsmith, recognized as a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure), based in Ōta City, Gunma Prefecture. He studied under Miyairi Akihira (宮入昭平), a Living National Treasure who led the postwar revival of Japanese sword-making, and has dedicated himself to transmitting ancient tamahagane (jeweled steel) forging techniques to the present era.

The defining characteristic of Toshihira's swords lies in the thorough exploitation of tamahagane and the extraordinary beauty of the jigane (blade body) that rivals that of ancient blades. In an age when traditional tatara smelting has largely faded away, he personally selects premium-quality tamahagane produced through these ancient methods and subjects it to repeated cycles of folding and forging. This produces the lustrous jigane found in few contemporary swords. The jigane is dominated by a fine ko-itame hada grain pattern, with itame and masame naturally interwoven to create a complex and beautiful landscape. The hamon (edge pattern) is founded on the suguha (straight edge) style; its sharp, brilliant appearance earned him the epithet "Ōsumi of the straight edge." The nioi-guchi (edge quality) is tight, the nie (boiling pattern) fine and uniform, yielding an elegant finish that evokes the masterpieces of antiquity.

Beyond the aesthetic perfection of his blades, Toshihira has made outstanding contributions to the restoration and study of tatara smelting and to the training of successors. His workshop has produced numerous accomplished contemporary swordsmiths, greatly advancing the preservation and transmission of Japanese sword-making traditions. He has also championed the promotion of Gunma's iron culture, disseminating the cultural significance of Japanese swords to the wider public through restoration demonstrations and lectures on tatara smelting.

His designation as a Living National Treasure attests to achieving the highest technical standards among contemporary swordsmiths. Toshihira's works are housed in the collections of collectors and museums both in Japan and abroad. A single blade may command a price ranging from several million to over ten million yen, and he continues to be recognized as one of the foremost contemporary swordsmiths. His works bear signatures including "Toshihira" and "Jōshū-jū Toshihira"; signed examples are preserved in sword museums, art museums nationwide, and in private collections of established families.
