Description
Origins and Relocation
Echizen Kinai was a lineage of tsuba (sword-guard) makers who moved from Ōmi Province to Echizen Province; the founder is said to have relocated during the Kan'ei era (1624–1644). The workshop subsequently served as official tsuba makers to the Echizen Matsudaira clan, with the Kinai name passed down through successive generations into the late Edo period.
Style
The school specialized in round iron tsuba with angular rims and openwork (sukashi) carving. Many surviving pieces incorporate the Matsudaira clan's aoi (hollyhock) crest, and auspicious motifs such as the lobster (ebi), a symbol of longevity, were also favored.
Signature Convention
Kinai-school pieces are notable for a distinctive practice of cutting the signature on the reverse side of the tsuba, reportedly out of deference to their lordly patrons, the Matsudaira clan.
Reputation and Attribution Challenges
The Kinai name was carried through multiple generations across the Edo period, but because apprentices and workshop craftsmen also produced pieces under the same signature, it remains difficult to determine with certainty which generation made any individual surviving work. Even so, the school is remembered as the mainstream lineage of openwork tsuba making in Echizen and left a lasting mark on the history of Japanese sword fittings.
