Description
Taikei Naotane was one of the foremost swordsmiths of the late Edo revival movement, taking the principles of his master Suishinshi Masahide to new depths of mastery and applying multiple classical traditions with remarkable versatility. Born in Dewa Province (present-day Yamagata Prefecture), he studied under Masahide in Edo, then charted his own course while carrying forward the revival ideal. His singular achievement lay in his ability to reproduce—at the highest level—the Bizen, Sōshū, Yamato, and Yamashiro traditions, leaving behind masterworks in each school's style. This katana, approximately 72 centimeters in length, displays a brilliant chōji-midare hamon in the manner of the Bizen Ichimonji school, elegantly recreating the dignity of Ko-Bizen at its greatest. The jigane features a tight ko-itame grain with even ji-nie, and the blade shows a soft, glowing utsuri (reflected tempering pattern) rising from the base of the hamon—a demanding technical achievement. Naotane was supported by Bakumatsu reformers, and received numerous commissions from the Date clan of Sendai and other Tōhoku domains. Recognized today as the pinnacle of the shin-shintō (new revival sword) tradition, this blade in the Token Museum collection represents the finest expression of late Edo sword culture.
Legends & Stories
When forging a blade, Naotane is said to have declared, 'When a samurai stakes his life on this sword, the sword will answer him'—reflecting a profound belief in the unity of blade and bearer's fate. Among the Bakumatsu loyalists of the sonnō-jōi movement, many carried Naotane's swords, and the saying spread that 'Naotane's blades protect those who fight for righteousness.' Upon completing each finished sword, Naotane reportedly bowed deeply to the blade before presenting it—a gesture of reverence that made a lasting impression on all who witnessed it. A legend from his home province of Dewa recounts that the young Naotane encountered a white-haired elder (the mountain deity) in the mountains, who declared, 'Your swords will become the finest blades under heaven'—and so, his life's work confirmed the prophecy.
