Image recognition AI is increasingly used as a supplementary tool for advanced tasks such as "hamon identification," "period estimation," and "maker attribution" — work that was once the exclusive domain of skilled appraisers. Meanwhile, generative AI is being utilized for translating sword content, creating product descriptions, and auto-generating captions for social media.
At the forefront of AI adoption are sword-specialist trading companies actively expanding e-commerce operations for overseas markets. Vendors struggling with the dilemma of translation costs versus quality while strengthening sales to English-speaking, Chinese-speaking, and German-speaking markets are finding new opportunities in generative AI's multilingual capabilities.
The most attention-grabbing application is "automatic hamon classification." Multiple research institutions are working on training machine learning models with thousands of hamon images to determine whether the hamon is "suguha or midare-ba" and "choji or gunome."
At Tokyo University of the Arts and Kyoto Institute of Technology, researchers are studying the digital measurement of jihada patterns in Japanese swords and their application to machine learning models, with multiple papers published between 2023 and 2025. These studies address the question "Can AI identify sword makers?" and conclude that "while helpful for preliminary screening, final determination requires human experts."
A notable commercial precedent is the image search system adopted by Western auction houses. The system automatically searches for similar past auction results from photos of swords being offered and presents reference price ranges, enhancing bidder convenience while contributing to market transparency.
One of the greatest challenges for Japanese sword specialty shops is "accurate product descriptions in foreign languages." Sword terminology contains many uniquely Japanese concepts such as "nie," "nioi," "mune," and "nakago," and meaning is often lost in machine translation.
To address this, fine-tuned models incorporating specialized sword terminology dictionaries are beginning to be utilized. However, this field has significant constraints. The Japanese sword market has low liquidity, and even works from the same maker and period show significant individual variation. Furthermore, most auction price data is non-public, creating fundamental limitations in the quality and quantity of training data. Currently, it remains at the stage of being used as a "rough price range reference," and careful implementation is required for formal appraisal and assessment use.
AI adoption carries a paradoxical risk: increased counterfeiting threats. Researchers have already pointed out the risk that AI-generated "plausible mei" and "typical hamon patterns" could be misused in creating counterfeits.
Combining high-resolution 3D scanning with generative AI makes it technically possible to create superficially sophisticated replicas. In response, the industry is exploring using AI-driven "microstructure analysis" (fine-pattern analysis of jihada) to distinguish genuine from fake. An "arms race" between counterfeiting and authentication AI is beginning in the sword industry as well.
Among sword makers and polishers, there is strong caution about AI adoption. The words of a polisher saying "hamon cannot be identified from photographs — the way light hits it shows a completely different appearance" succinctly demonstrate the limits of digitalization.
The fundamental value of the sword industry lies in the skilled "eye" and "hand" of the craftsperson. While AI is effective as a supplementary tool, there is industry-wide agreement that final appraisal responsibility must remain with human experts. What AI brings to the sword industry is both an opportunity for efficiency and new market development, and a catalyst for recognizing anew the value of human discernment.
In the future, concepts for "digital appraisal certificates" for Japanese swords are also being discussed. The idea is to combine AI analysis data with blockchain-based digital provenance ledgers to achieve tamper-resistant authenticity verification. At NBTHK and some auction houses, discussions are underway toward pilot implementation of such next-generation authentication systems.
The digital transformation of the sword industry is still in its early stages. However, there is no doubt that an era has arrived in which the industry as a whole must explore how to use the powerful tool of AI to both protect cultural property and maintain market integrity.
