This occurs when a gap has developed between the blade and the inner surface of the sheath (sheath wood), and is most commonly caused by sheath wood shrinkage due to humidity fluctuations, or by wear inside the sheath wood from long-term use. If left unaddressed, the blade will continue to move minutely inside the sheath, causing surface scuff marks on the blade and causing lacquer inside the sheath to flake off.
When addressing this issue, the first thing to check is the humidity environment. If sheath rattle becomes pronounced during the dry winter months, returning humidity to around 50% may naturally resolve the problem. As a temporary remedy, you can insert a few thin sheets of paper near the carp mouth of the sheath to restore contact between the blade and sheath wood. However, this is only a temporary measure; fundamentally, you should ask a sheath maker to re-fit the sheath wood, adjusting the inner diameter to fit the blade precisely—a process known as "internal sheath fitting." Especially for valuable blades, attempting makeshift repairs on your own risk damaging the interior, so it is wise to consult a specialist early on.
The mekugi is a small bamboo peg that passes through and secures the hilt and tang, and is an extremely important component that supports the overall stability of the blade. If the mekugi loosens, the blade will become unstable within the hilt, and this can lead to serious accidents during iaido or tameshigiri. During routine inspection, hold the hilt and gently move the blade up and down to check for any "clatter" sensation. If you feel even the slightest irregularity, always inspect the condition of the mekugi.
Use a dedicated mekugi remover when removing the peg. Never force it out by striking. Examine the removed mekugi for cracks, deformation, or wear; if any deterioration is visible, immediately replace it with a new one. Homemade bamboo mekugi vary greatly in strength depending on fiber direction and drying level, so it is safest to purchase from a reliable sword shop or sheath maker. In cases where the mekugi hole itself has widened, replacement alone will not solve the problem; the hilt will need to be remade or the hole repaired. In such cases, always consult a hilt maker or sheath maker.
When the carp mouth (the opening through which the blade enters and exits the sheath) becomes stuck and won't draw, or once drawn won't return to the sheath, it is usually caused by sudden humidity changes, buildup of hardened polishing powder inside, or oxidized oil accumulation. The greatest danger is forcing the blade out, causing the spine or edge to strike the inside of the sheath and incur serious damage.
If sticking is suspected, first do not force it; try placing it in an environment with controlled room temperature and humidity for several hours to half a day. The microfine swelling of the sheath wood caused by humidity change may ease, allowing it to move naturally. If it still will not move, absolutely do not attempt to force it out yourself; bring it to a reliable sword shop or sheath maker. A specialist understands the internal structure and possesses the technique to safely remove the carp mouth. It is also important to reconsider how frequently you draw the blade from its sheath. Repeatedly drawing and returning the blade for appreciation can damage the lacquer and wood inside the sheath.
When the entire hilt is loose, or when you feel a subtle twisting sensation when gripping it, the problem may lie not only with the mekugi but also with the hilt wrapping itself or the hilt wood (the wood beneath the ray skin). Hilt wrapping naturally loosens with use, and especially for swords used in iaido or training, re-wrapping every few years is necessary. Deterioration inside the hilt wood, ray skin peeling, and loosening of the under-wrapping are difficult to judge visually and cannot be determined without opening the hilt.
If looseness is pronounced, it is best practice to suspend use for safety and request inspection by a hilt maker. Particularly when rust is developing on the tang, the tang may move slightly within the hilt wood, potentially affecting the strength of the tang itself over time. This is an extremely dangerous condition during iaido or tameshigiri and must never be ignored. On the other hand, if hilt looseness develops in a sword being stored purely as an art object, while it is not urgent, early restoration is desirable for future preservation.
There are certain problems with Japanese swords that you must never attempt yourself and should always entrust to a specialist. If red rust appears on the blade, you may lightly wipe it with polishing powder, but you should absolutely avoid polishing stubborn rust yourself. Improper polishing will permanently damage the blade's shape and significantly reduce its valuation. Similarly, blade chips, deep rust on the tang, tip deformation, and curvature distortion all require professional treatment by a polisher.
If traces of insect damage (fine wood dust or small holes) are found inside the sheath, this is a serious issue. If insect damage is progressing inside the sheath wood, the structure may become brittle without visible signs, and the sheath could suddenly crack. In this case, promptly consult a sheath maker and consider having the sheath remade if necessary. The golden rule of Japanese sword preservation is "early discovery and early action." Consulting a specialist without hesitation when you notice anything amiss is the surest path to passing your sword to the next generation.
