* Image is for illustrative purposes only.The most standard wood material used for Japanese sword scabbards (saya) is magnolia (Magnolia obovata). This choice is not coincidental, but stems from the fact that magnolia's physical properties are ideal for sword storage.
The main characteristics of magnolia are as follows. First, moderate softness and workability: softer than iron, it can be precisely carved with chisels. To carve grooves that faithfully reproduce the blade's tame (the manner of its curve), wood material that allows precise processing is essential. Second, humidity adjustment: magnolia has moderate moisture-regulating properties and is said to prevent over-drying and condensation inside the saya. Additionally, low oil content: wood with high oil content can cause blade rust, so magnolia is preferred for its low oil content and neutral properties. Furthermore, crack resistance: its uniform grain pattern results in relatively little deformation or cracking after drying.
The most important condition for making a good saya is "adequate drying." If a saya is made using green wood (namaki) or insufficiently dried wood, the wood will shrink and warp after completion, causing the saya to become warped so the blade no longer fits, or alternatively, the blade may become stuck inside the saya—serious problems can result.
Traditionally, natural drying over 3–10 years has been considered ideal. Wood is stored in a well-ventilated location away from direct sunlight and rain, with moisture slowly removed; natural drying prevents sudden warping. In modern times, artificial drying (low-temperature drying and RF drying) is also used, but whether this achieves the same quality as natural drying is a matter of debate among craftsmen.
Renowned saya craftsmen constantly maintain multiple pieces of material "in stock," and "material management"—selecting and appropriately using materials with different drying periods—is one of their important tasks.
When using magnolia as saya material, the judgment of "grain selection"—determining in which direction to carve the groove—greatly affects quality.
Wood has three grain directions: "straight grain (masame)," "flat grain (itame)," and "end grain (koguchi)." Straight grain is a surface cut perpendicular to the growth rings, characterized by striped, straight grain patterns. Flat grain is a surface cut parallel to the growth rings, featuring curved grain patterns. End grain is a cross-section perpendicular to the growth rings.
The ideal grain selection for a saya is "straight grain cutting (masame dori)." A saya made from straight-grain boards experiences minimal warping from drying and is stable for long-term storage. In contrast, flat-grain material displays beautiful figuring (moku), but is said to carry a higher risk of warping.
When determining grain selection, saya craftsmen pay closest attention to "the presence of knots (fushi)" and "grain irregularities." If knots are present, cracks are prone to develop after drying, and grain irregularities make warping difficult to predict. The experience of assessing these by eye and touch when handling the material is at the core of "a craftsman's discerning eye."
Magnolia is distributed throughout Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu, but wood quality differs by region. Generally, wood from cold regions has tightly packed, fine growth rings and higher density. This is because growth is slow and cell walls form thickly, which is said to result in higher durability as saya material.
Hokkaido and Northeast magnolia is particularly highly regarded among saya craftsmen, but securing high-quality material has become increasingly difficult. In recent years, as domestic supply has declined, European magnolia species (Magnolia acuminata and related species) are being tested as substitutes, but many craftsmen dislike the quality difference from Japanese wood.
Modern saya craftsmen commonly cite "difficulty obtaining high-quality magnolia" as a shared problem. A specialized supply route between forest management and timber merchants once existed for saya craftsmen, but the decline of forestry and the aging and closure of intermediary businesses have reduced the flow of premium material.
Furthermore, adequate drying time requires long-term inventory storage, which also involves cash flow issues. In the work of saya craftsmen, where mass production is difficult, "advance procurement and inventory management" of high-quality materials is not merely a technical challenge but also a management one.
In the transmission of saya craftsmanship, teaching disciples material knowledge—"how to evaluate wood, how to dry wood, and how to select grain"—is considered an educational task equally important as, if not more important than, how to carve the blade.
