The main characteristics of magnolia wood are as follows.
While magnolia wood is soft and easy to work, its fibers are dense, allowing it to maintain strength even when carved thin—another reason it is valued as scabbard material. Since a scabbard must encase the sword blade, it cannot be made unnecessarily thick, yet must be crafted from a material that resists cracking or warping even when thin. This combination of "softness and strength" is precisely why magnolia wood, rather than other timber, has continued to be chosen.
Sheaths are broadly divided into two types: shirasaya and koshirae. Shirasaya uses no lacquer or metalwork whatsoever; it is a storage-dedicated sheath fashioned from plain magnolia wood, with the wood surface absorbing excess moisture through direct contact with the blade and preventing rust. Koshirae, by contrast, is an exterior decorated with lacquer coating and metal fittings, created for viewing and wearing. Magnolia wood underlayers are often used inside koshirae as well; the lacquer and metalwork are merely surface finishes, and the inner wood contacting the blade remains magnolia, as in shirasaya. Shirasaya is recommended for long-term storage because the wood can remain in direct contact with the blade without the intermediary of lacquer or metal.
The most critical requirement for making a quality scabbard is "thorough drying." Using green wood or insufficiently dried timber results in serious problems after completion: the wood shrinks and warps, the scabbard becomes twisted and no longer accommodates the blade, or the blade becomes stuck inside the scabbard.
Traditionally, natural drying over 3 to 10 years has been considered ideal. Drying wood slowly in a well-ventilated area protected from direct sunlight and rain prevents sudden warping. Today, artificial drying methods (low-temperature drying, high-frequency drying) are also used, though craftsmen disagree on whether they achieve quality equivalent to natural drying.
If wood is fashioned into a scabbard before adequate drying, dimensions continue to change for years afterward as internal moisture gradually escapes. Scabbard makers invest such long periods in drying because they wait patiently for the wood to reach equilibrium with its surroundings and stabilize in dimension.
Renowned scabbard makers always maintain multiple pieces of wood "in inventory," and managing these materials—selecting and using appropriately dried pieces of different ages—is also a crucial part of their work.
When using magnolia wood for scabbard material, the decision of which direction to carve the groove—the "wood cutting" (kidori)—greatly affects quality.
Wood has three grain directions: "straight grain" (masame), "flat grain" (itame), and "end grain" (koguchi).

The ideal for scabbard wood cutting is masame (straight grain cutting). Scabbards made from straight-grain boards show minimal warping from drying and remain stable for long-term storage. Flat-grain materials display attractive figure (moku), but carry higher deformation risk. In straight-grain scabbards, the characteristic feature is that striped patterns aligned with annual rings run straight along the scabbard's length; this difference from wavy-grained flat-grain materials is easily distinguished by comparison.
When determining wood cutting, scabbard makers pay closest attention to "the presence or absence of knots" and "grain irregularities." Knots tend to crack after drying, and grain irregularities make it difficult to predict warping. The experience of assessing materials by eye and touch—this is the essence of the craftsman's discernment.
A scabbard is not carved from a single piece of wood but is constructed by joining two boards grooved to follow the blade's shape. This joining has long employed a paste called sukui, made from ground rice grains. Rather than using synthetic adhesive to bond permanently, this allows the scabbard to be opened and the interior inspected or repaired when needed. Because a scabbard must protect a blade over many years, the choice of joining method—one that anticipates future maintenance—reveals that scabbard makers' work extends far beyond simply "carving and assembling."
Magnolia wood is distributed throughout Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu, but wood quality differs by region of origin. Wood from cold regions has fine, tightly packed annual rings and higher density. Because growth is slower and cell walls form thicker, it is said to have greater durability as scabbard material.
Magnolia from Hokkaido and Tohoku is particularly valued among scabbard makers, and securing high-quality material has become increasingly difficult. In recent years, as domestic supply has declined, European magnolia species (such as Magnolia acuminata and related species) have been tested as substitutes, though many craftsmen dislike the quality difference from Japanese material.
What modern scabbard makers commonly report is "difficulty obtaining quality magnolia material." Once, established supply routes existed between forestry management and timber merchants specifically serving scabbard makers, but the decline of forestry and the aging and closure of intermediary businesses have narrowed the distribution of premium material.
Ensuring adequate drying periods requires long-term inventory storage, which also brings financial constraints. For scabbard makers who cannot engage in mass production, "advance procurement and inventory management" of quality materials is not merely a technical challenge but also a business one.
In transmitting scabbard-making skills to apprentices, imparting material knowledge—"how to evaluate wood, how to dry it, how to cut it"—is regarded as an educational task equally important as, if not more so than, teaching blade carving techniques.
When sheathing a sword, the tightness of the koiguchi (the mouth of the scabbard) serves as an indicator of the scabbard's condition. If too loose, the blade will rattle inside the scabbard, potentially causing internal damage. Conversely, if too tight, forcing the blade in and out repeatedly will strain both scabbard and blade. One should also periodically check that the entire scabbard is free of cracks or separation at joints, and that the wood shows no signs of mold or insect damage. When storing, choosing a location with minimal temperature and humidity fluctuation and avoiding direct sunlight is fundamental to preserving both scabbard and blade.
