The habaki is a metal ring-shaped component fixed directly above the ha-machi (blade root) on the sword blade. It sits snugly against the koiguchi (mouth of the scabbard) to secure the sword within the scabbard and handles the friction and alignment during drawing and sheathing.
Though it may seem a humble part, poor precision in the habaki causes the blade to rattle within the scabbard and damages the wood at the scabbard mouth during unsheathing. If the habaki's fit is too loose, the blade may slip out of the scabbard. In supporting the safety and operability of the sword fittings, the habaki is truly the linchpin of sword fittings.
Sword fitting production in the Edo period was highly specialized, with distinct trades such as tsuba makers, menuki makers, fuchi-kashira makers, tsuka-wrappers, scabbard makers, and lacquerers. Among these, the habaki was typically the domain of metal craftsmen called shirogane-shi (white metal workers), a term that has evolved to habaki-shi (habaki makers) in modern times.
The habaki maker's work is precision metalworking tailored to the shape of the blade root. Since each blade has different dimensions, the habaki is essentially made to order for each piece. While "fitting work"—adjusting and modifying ready-made habaki to the blade—is sometimes done, habaki for masterwork blades are typically created fresh.
The habaki maker's day begins with material preparation. Habaki materials fall into three main categories.

| Copper (akagane) | The most versatile and easy to work with, used for affordable habaki. "Gold-clad copper habaki (kinki-se do-habaki)" and "silver-clad copper habaki" belong to this type, with thin layers of gold or silver applied to the surface. |
| Shakudo | An alloy of copper with a few percent gold. When treated with the "niiro" (boiling color) chemical process, it develops a distinctive deep black. Widely used for elegant fittings and commonly seen in antique habaki from the Kamakura through Muromachi periods. |
| Silver (shirogane) | Used as a material signifying samurai status. "Polished silver habaki" is characterized by white luster. In modern times, silver alloys that are easier to handle than pure silver are often used. |
Morning work begins by processing the material sheet to the needed thickness. The metal plate is hammered and stretched, then cut to a size matching the width of the blade root. Precision at this stage governs all subsequent processes, so measurement with calipers and rulers is done with meticulous care.
The cut metal sheet is gradually shaped to match the cross-sectional form of the blade. The habaki maker uses small hammers and tagane (chisels) to bend, compress, and shape the metal plate.
The blade's cross-section follows complex curves—if it features the shinogi-zukuri style, the blade surface and edge surface meet at different angles along the ridge line—so precisely joining a simple metal plate requires sophisticated handiwork. This process of shaping the habaki's interior to follow the blade's outer contour is called seme (attacking).
Once shaping is roughly complete in the morning, the habaki is trial-fitted to the actual blade to check for gaps and looseness. The habaki must be neither too tight nor too loose against the blade. Habaki makers describe the ideal fit as "a slightly damp resistance"—it should slide in smoothly, yet require some force when pressed lightly with the finger, a delicate balance.
Once trial fitting is successful, work moves to final joining of the seams and surface finishing. Ideally, the habaki is formed as a single piece, but in practice, the "seam line (hagi-me)" where the wrapped metal plate meets is often joined using brazing with silver or gold solder.
Surface treatment that follows depends on the material. For copper or shakudo, the niiro (boiling color) process—the material is boiled in a mixture of ammonium chloride, vinegar, and water to promote oxidation and develop a distinctive deep tone. This color is "chemical rust" with long-term stability.
For silver, polishing is standard: first using coarse and medium whetstones to remove scratches, then using a tool called a "hera" (scraper) to compress the surface and bring out luster. Final mirror finishing employs frictional polishing with charcoal powder.
Modern habaki makers face multiple challenges.
A movement has emerged for multiple sword smiths and fitting craftsmen to band together for joint procurement and storage of materials, with the Tokyo Sword Merchants Association and regional sword preservation societies playing a role.
Currently, full-time habaki makers are estimated at several dozen across Japan. Many are dual-trade workers handling sword fittings broadly as shirogane-shi or metal craftsmen, while those specializing purely in habaki are even rarer.
Technical succession typically follows the apprenticeship system, with independence coming after several years of training. However, accepting apprentices requires the master to have stable work, and in recent years, many aging masters have stopped accepting successors.
Events such as "Kodugu no Kai" (Small Fittings Gathering)—exhibitions and markets for sword fittings—function to maintain networks of craftspeople, giving younger habaki makers opportunities to observe the work of senior masters up close. The precise work the habaki maker performs in completing a single blade—efforts to transmit this to the next generation continue quietly to this day.
