佐竹義宣
The Upright Lord of Hitachi Moved to Akita
Description
Satake Yoshinobu (1570-1633) was the son of Satake Yoshishige, ruler of Hitachi Province, and later became the first lord of Kubota Domain in Dewa. He succeeded his father upon the latter's retirement; the date is debated, with early 1589 the leading view.
At Sekigahara (1600) he is said to have made a secret pact with Uesugi Kagekatsu, but the clan was not united and he did not take an active part, withdrawing to Mito Castle on the 25th day of the eighth month. After the war, persuaded by his father, he apologized to Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1602. That year he was transferred from 540,000 koku in Hitachi to 200,000 koku in Dewa, entering Tsuchizaki Minato Castle on 17 September 1602 and making Kubota Castle his main seat from 1603.
He is said to have rescued Ishida Mitsunari when the latter was attacked, and Ieyasu reportedly remarked that he had never seen anyone as upright as Yoshinobu. No sword associated personally with Yoshinobu was found in the sources checked, so none is described here.
