三好義継
Head of the Miyoshi Main Family, Lord of Wakae Castle
Description
Life
Born in 1551 as the son of Sogō Kazumasa, younger brother of Miyoshi Chōkei. In 1563, after the early death of Chōkei's heir Yoshioki, he was adopted by Chōkei and took the Miyoshi surname. When Chōkei died in 1564, he inherited headship of the Miyoshi main family under the guardianship of the Miyoshi Triumvirate, becoming lord of Iimori Castle in Kawachi Province.
Military Career
In 1565 he is said to have taken part in the Eiroku Incident, in which the Miyoshi Triumvirate and Matsunaga Hisahide attacked and killed shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru. When Oda Nobunaga marched on Kyoto in 1568 in support of Ashikaga Yoshiaki, Yoshitsugu surrendered alongside Matsunaga Hisahide and was confirmed in control of northern Kawachi Province and Wakae Castle.
Downfall and Death
After the exiled shogun Yoshiaki took refuge with him at Wakae Castle, Yoshitsugu incurred Nobunaga's wrath. In November 1573, an Oda army under Sakuma Nobumori attacked the castle; betrayed by several of his senior retainers, Wakae Castle fell, and Yoshitsugu took his own life along with his wife and children, effectively ending the Miyoshi main family's status as a Sengoku daimyo house.
Later Reputation
His fate embodies the process by which the regional hegemony built by Miyoshi Chōkei in the Kinai region was supplanted by the rising Oda regime, marking him as a pivotal figure at a turning point in late Sengoku-period politics.
