Description

Life and Origins

Takeda Yoshinobu (1538–1567) was born as the eldest son of Takeda Harunobu (Shingen), the famous warlord of Kai Province. His mother was the Lady Sanjo, a daughter of the court noble Sanjo Kintada. In 1553, Yoshinobu came of age and received the character "Yoshi" from Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru. He married the daughter of Imagawa Yoshimoto, cementing the Kai-Sagami-Suruga tripartite alliance.

Military Achievements

Yoshinobu distinguished himself from his first campaign in 1552, when at age 15 he helped subjugate the Chiku clan in Shinano Province. At the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima in 1561, he led a charge against Uesugi Kenshin's headquarters and won notable battle honors. He was emerging as a capable successor to his father's legacy.

The Yoshinobu Incident and Disinheritance

In 1565, a plot to assassinate Shingen, allegedly involving Yoshinobu's guardian Obu Toramasa, was revealed by Toramasa's own brother. Toramasa was forced to commit suicide, and Yoshinobu was confined to Toko-ji temple in Kofu and stripped of his succession rights. Historians debate the causes, but the most compelling explanation is the conflict between Yoshinobu's deep ties to the Imagawa clan — his wife was Imagawa Yoshimoto's daughter — and Shingen's pivotal decision to invade Imagawa-controlled Suruga. Yoshinobu died in confinement in 1567 at age 30; recent research based on funeral records suggests illness rather than suicide.
