Lord of the Kiso Valley in Shinano Who Broke with Takeda Katsuyori and Went Over to Oda, Opening the Way to the Fall of the Takeda
Description
Kiso Yoshimasa was the lord of the Kiso Valley in Shinano Province and the eldest son of Kiso Yoshiyasu. He was born in Tenbun 9 (1540). Three dates are given for his death: the 13th day of the 2nd month of Bunroku 4 (1595), the 17th day of the 3rd month of the same year, and the 13th day of the 7th month of Keichō 1 (1596). The date has not been settled.
Submission to the Takeda
He was attacked by the Takeda and came under their command. Shingen gave his daughter Lady Mari-hime to Yoshimasa in marriage.
Breaking with Takeda Katsuyori
In the first month of Tensho 10 (1582), through Tōno Tomotada, he answered an approach from the Oda and broke with Takeda Katsuyori, sending his younger brother Uematsu Yoshitoyo as a hostage. Katsuyori is said to have had Yoshimasa's mother, consorts and children executed at Shin-Fu Castle, and sent an army against him. Yoshimasa repulsed it at the Battle of Torii Pass. The Takeda house later fell.
Service to Nobunaga, Ieyasu and Hideyoshi
After the fall of the Takeda he served Nobunaga. After the Honnō-ji Incident, during the Tenshō Jingo Rebellion, he moved to the side of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In Tensho 12 (1584) he submitted to Hashiba Hideyoshi and sent his third son Yoshiharu as a hostage. Afterwards he came under Ieyasu's command. In Tensho 18 (1590), when Ieyasu was moved to the Kanto, he moved to Achito in Shimōsa Province (present-day Asahi City, Chiba Prefecture) with a domain of 10,000 koku. His heir Yoshitoshi succeeded him.
Death
By his will, his body is said to have been given a water burial in Lake Tsubaki.
