北条義時
2nd Regent of Kamakura Shogunate
Description
Hōjō Yoshitoki (1163-1224) was a warrior who established the Hōjō clan's political foundation as the 2nd Regent of the Kamakura Shogunate. Serving as Minamoto no Yoritomo's brother-in-law from the beginning, he played an important role in the establishment of the shogunate. After Yoritomo's death, together with his father Hōjō Tokimasa, he grasped the real power of the shogunate, and later ousted Tokimasa to monopolize the position of regent.
Yoshitoki's greatest achievement was his victory in the Jōkyū Disturbance of 1221. When Retired Emperor Go-Toba plotted to overthrow the shogunate and issued an imperial edict for Yoshitoki's destruction, Yoshitoki rallied the warrior retainers and dispatched a large army to Kyoto. With overwhelming military force, the shogunate forces suppressed the imperial court forces, and Retired Emperor Go-Toba was exiled to Oki. Through this victory, the shogunate established authority surpassing the imperial court, and the position of warrior government became unshakable.
Yoshitoki possessed deep knowledge of swords and is said to have patronized swordsmiths in Sagami Province. Under his rule, Kamakura flourished as the center of warrior culture, and the culture of sword appreciation was also cultivated. Yoshitoki's personal swords are transmitted as famous blades and were cherished as symbols of warrior leadership. His political acumen and martial valor set a model for later warriors, making him a great warrior who laid the foundation for the Hōjō clan's long-lasting regime.
