The "Old Tanuki of Awa" Who Built Tokushima Castle
Description
Hachisuka Iemasa (1558-1639) was the son of Hachisuka Masakatsu, a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and became daimyo of Awa Province. In the 1585 Shikoku campaign he distinguished himself at Kizu and Ichinomiya castles and was rewarded with all of Awa (180,000 koku in 1586). He built Tokushima Castle, suppressed the Iyayama uprising over five years, and carried out the Taiko land survey in 1589.
He fought in Korea, aiding Katō Kiyomasa and Asano Yoshinaga around Ulsan in 1597, but a proposal to scale back the front angered Hideyoshi and he was punished. At Sekigahara Awa was occupied by the Mōri; Iemasa took Buddhist vows and went to Kōyasan, but his heir Yoshishige fought for the Eastern Army and the domain was confirmed. In the Osaka campaign he was held back by his son and confined, while Yoshishige fought at Kizugawaguchi for the Tokugawa.
Date Masamune called him the "old tanuki of Awa." He was deeply versed in the tea ceremony, close to Sen no Rikyū, collected many tea utensils, and was a Christian believer. No sword associated with him was found in the sources checked.
