Ashikaga Yoshiaki

Ashikaga Yoshiaki (1537-1597) was the 15th and final shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate. In the twilight years of the Sengoku period, when the authority of the Muromachi Shogunate had greatly diminished, he lived a turbulent life seeking the protection of warriors tasked with national unification while attempting to restore authority.

Initially taking refuge with the Asakura clan in Echizen, Yoshiaki approached Oda Nobunaga to achieve his entry into Kyoto, becoming the 15th shogun in 1568. However, treated as Nobunaga's puppet, Yoshiaki eventually joined forces with anti-Nobunaga powers, forming an "encirclement of Nobunaga" involving Takeda Shingen, Asakura Yoshikage, Asai Nagamasa, and the Honganji. In 1573, he was expelled from Kyoto by Nobunaga, effectively ending the Muromachi Shogunate.

Even after his expulsion, Yoshiaki continued to insist on his position as shogun, continuing his resistance under the protection of the Mōri clan. Later, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi unified the country, Yoshiaki finally resigned from the position of shogun (1588). Regarding swords, as an heir to the famous swords passed down in the Muromachi shogunal family, he also served as a guardian of sword culture. Yoshiaki's existence symbolizes the end of the Muromachi Shogunate as a warrior government, while clearly demonstrating the historical figure of the divergence between authority and actual power in warrior society.
