Gassan Sadakazu II

Gassan Sadakazu II (1907–1995) was a preeminent swordsmith representing the Showa and Heisei eras, designated a Living National Treasure (Jūyō Mukei Bunkazai Hojisha) for his swordmaking technique in 1971. As head of the Gassan school, he inherited, sustained, and advanced the tradition of the Gassan lineage that continued from the late Edo period into the modern age. Though the first Gassan Sadakazu was renowned as a master craftsman of the shinshintō period, the second Gassan Sadakazu established a new apex of the Gassan school in the modern sword world and left an imperishable name in Japanese sword history. Throughout his life, Gassan Sadakazu II dedicated himself to the restoration and perfection of "ayasugi-hada"—the defining characteristic of the Gassan school—achievements that earned him the highest evaluation in the technical history of the Japanese sword. Ayasugi-hada is a distinctive forging expression in which the jigane's forged surface displays a rhythmic wood-grain pattern resembling the interweaving grain of a cedar (sugi) tree, a secret technique uniquely transmitted within the Gassan lineage. The creation of ayasugi-hada requires special forging methods and advanced temperature control; Gassan Sadakazu II conducted thorough research and refinement of this technique, successfully achieving flawless recreation of perfect ayasugi-hada in the modern era. His hamon display diverse forms—suguha, notare, and gunome—and in all examples he prioritized harmony with the ayasugi-hada jigane, with finely distributed, evenly spaced nie exhibiting dignified workmanship. His taihai (body proportions) encompassed a broad range of sword types: tachi, katana, wakizashi, and tantō, though all exemplified a dignified form that honored classical tradition. Based in Osaka, Gassan Sadakazu II trained numerous disciples and shaped the lineage of the modern Gassan school. His blades are held in the Tōken Hakubutsukan and major collections both domestic and international, continuing to be valued as the pinnacle of modern swordmaking.
