* Image is for illustrative purposes only.The yoroidoshi (armor-piercing short sword) was a tanto specially designed from the middle of the Kamakura period through the Sengoku period to pierce through enemy armor, particularly the do (torso armor) and shoulder plates. The blade length was approximately one shaku (30-35 cm), significantly thicker than standard short swords (tantō worn at the waist or in formal dress), with an extremely sharp, finely honed point.
Its purpose was clear. When medieval samurai engaged in close combat and found swords and spears ineffective due to proximity, drawing the short sword to pierce armor at the seams and drive the blade into vital points (under the arms, groin, and neck) was tactically essential. The yoroidoshi was a weapon specialized exclusively for the highly practical purpose of "armor penetration."
The greatest distinguishing feature of the yoroidoshi compared to standard short swords is blade thickness. While ordinary short swords have blade thickness of approximately 5-8 mm, the yoroidoshi's thickness could reach 10-15 mm.
This thickness allowed the blade to maintain its penetrating force against enemy armor (a composite structure of iron, leather, and fabric) without breaking or bending. Simultaneously, the blade width (the distance from the base to the tip) was typically kept relatively narrow.
If the width were too broad, the blade would not fit between armor seams, and the blade could become stuck, risking being left embedded in the armor. In other words, reconciling the contradictory requirements of being "thick yet narrow" was fundamental to the yoroidoshi's design.
Another distinguishing feature of the yoroidoshi was its kissaki (point) honed to extreme sharpness. This prioritized "penetrating force" to pierce through armor seams.
The kissaki of standard tantō and longer blades is typically slightly rounded to accommodate cutting and slashing actions. However, the yoroidoshi's kissaki was needle-like in its sharpness, designed to maximize the physical phenomenon of "piercing through" enemy armor rather than "pushing aside" it when thrusting.
Honing this point was challenging for the togishi (sword polisher). Unintended curvature or uneven hardening during polishing could result in the point breaking.
The tsuka of the yoroidoshi was typically designed shorter than standard short swords. This reflected close-quarters combat at contact distance between armored opponents—a longer tsuka would catch on the opponent's armor, so a shorter design enhanced handling.
Furthermore, the yoroidoshi was typically not worn at the waist for daily carry but rather "brought to the battlefield and drawn in the final stages of close combat." Thus, the handle length and shape were designed for swift draw and precise thrusting at close range.
To pierce enemy armor, the blade required "hardness." Low hardness would cause the blade to bend upon contact with iron plates. Conversely, excessive hardness would make the blade brittle, increasing the risk of breakage.
To resolve this "hardness-toughness dilemma," yoroidoshi smiths adopted "layered construction." By placing hard iron on the outer layer (forming the hard edge) and soft iron (shintetsu or core iron) on the inner layer, they created a blade that was rigid externally yet flexible internally.
Polishing the yoroidoshi required more sophisticated techniques than ordinary short swords. To simultaneously maintain the point's "penetrating" sharpness while preserving "toughness against breakage"—contradictory goals—the togishi had to use increasingly fine whetstones in stages, performing remarkably precise polishing.
According to Edo-period polisher records, yoroidoshi polishing typically required 1.5 to 2 times longer than standard short swords—often 3 to 5 days.

Particularly crucial was the motion of "driving" the yoroidoshi rather than merely "thrusting" it when the enemy was falling or when grappling. That is, the swordsman would press the entire blade into the enemy using elbow force, then, once the point pierced the armor, twist the wrist to slide the blade horizontally, a technique that maximized the lethal effect by damaging blood vessels and organs.
The yoroidoshi is often confused with the "kabuto-dōshi" (helmet-piercing sword), which was designed to pierce the bowl (front) of a helmet. It was even shorter (approximately 20 cm) with a narrower point.
However, the kabuto-dōshi was extremely rare, and its battlefield use is believed to have been limited. Piercing the helmet's front required the opponent to face forward directly—a condition rarely met in actual combat.
Several yoroidoshi made by the renowned Kamakura-period swordsmith Osafune Mitsutada (備前長船光忠) survive today in private collections and museums. These represent "standard yoroidoshi" with blade lengths of 32-35 cm and thickness around 12 mm, serving as valuable examples of Mitsutada's high craftsmanship.
No surviving examples of yoroidoshi definitively attributed to the legendary swordsmith Soshu Masamune (相州正宗) are known to exist today. However, Edo-period sword-related texts contain references to "Masamune's yoroidoshi," suggesting his work in this form was highly praised.
During the Sengoku period (15th-16th centuries), large-scale field battles increased, making the short sword's role in close combat more critical. Production of yoroidoshi rose, with swordsmiths from various daimyo competing to create "short swords that pierce hard armor."
Records also indicate that during Oda Nobunaga's era, even thicker yoroidoshi were produced to counter the "new-style armor" (using thicker iron plates) adopted by Nobunaga's forces.
With the onset of the Edo period and the end of warfare, the yoroidoshi's practical combat value declined rapidly. However, as part of samurai lineage inheritance, possessing a yoroidoshi as a family treasure became valued as a symbol of "martial prowess."
During this period, old yoroidoshi came to be highly valued as works of art, and Edo-period swordsmiths began producing "new yoroidoshi" as well. However, these Edo creations no longer served practical combat purposes but rather functioned as expressions of samurai refinement and cultivation.
The yoroidoshi was born from the practical challenge medieval samurai faced: "How to penetrate enemy armor?" Its thickness, point sharpness, short handle, and layered construction were all optimized for the singular purpose of "armor penetration"—a masterwork born from craftsmen confronting battlefield reality.
While we moderns are often captivated by the beauty of Japanese swords, we must not forget that this beauty rests upon such practical functional design. The yoroidoshi stands as the most direct witness to the fact that the Japanese sword was foremost a "weapon" before it became a work of "art."
